A Dictionary of the English Language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Dictionary of the English Language, one of the most influential dictionaries in the history of the English language, was prepared by Samuel Johnson and published on April 15, 1755.
Johnson's dictionary was still considered authoritative until the appearance of the Oxford English Dictionary at the end of the nineteenth century.
In English (among others) John Cowell's Interpreter, a law dictionary, was published in 1607, Edward Phillips' The new world of English words came out in 1658 and a dictionary of 40,000 words had been prepared in 1721 by Nathan Bailey, though none were as comprehensive in breadth or style as Johnson's.

 Johnson, Preface to the Dictionary
Much less ought our written language to comply with the corruptions of oral utterance, or copy that which every variation of time or place makes different from itself, and imitate those changes, which will again be changed, while imitation is employed in observing them.
The French language has visibly changed under the inspection of the academy; the stile of Amelot's translation of father Paul is observed by Le Courayer to be un peu passè; and no Italian will maintain, that the diction of any modern writer is not perceptibly different from that of Boccace, Machiavel, or Caro.
Swift, in his petty treatise on the English language, allows that new words must sometimes be introduced, but proposes that none should be suffered to become obsolete.

 BBC - Staffordshire - Dr Johnson's Dictionary
Dr Johnson's dictionary wasn't the first to be published, but it's the one that all the poets and authors turned to for help and it's the basis of the books that we use today.
His father was a book seller, so books and the love of language were in his blood.
But much of the credit for its emergence must go to Dr Samuel Johnson, the Staffordshire man who produced the original "Dictionary Of The English Language" 250 years ago.

A Dictionary of the English Language --  Britannica Concise Encyclopedia - The online encyclopedia you can trust!
A Dictionary of the English Language included a history of the language, a grammar, and an extensive list of words representing basic general vocabulary, based on the best conversation of contemporary London and the normal usage of respected writers.
Its strength lay in two features: the original, carefully divided and ordered, elegantly formulated definitions of the main word stock of the language; and the copious citation of quotations from the entire range of English literature, which served in support and illustration and which exemplified the different shades of meaning of a particular word.

 BOOKFORUM Oct/Nov 2005
While Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary of the English Language, which celebrates its two hundred and fiftieth anniversary this year, is a greatly admired book, it is also surely one of the least read.
The Dictionary included over 114,000 quotations; a full third of these were from Shakespeare, Milton, and Dryden, helping to establish the importance of literary evidence for dictionaries and the importance of these writers for the future.
Joseph Addison had even begun work on a dictionary with quotations from literature, and Pope had expressed interest in the project as well.
