Lewis, C. S. (Clives Staples): A Grief Observed
A Grief Observed, released three years prior to Lewis's own death in 1963, was first published under the pseudonym N. Clerk.
In this undated journal, he documents with brief observations first the overwhelming sensations of his grief, then his rage and confusion at God.
As time passes, he chronicles his return to religion and his acceptance of a new life, forever shaded by Davidman's presence but still whole.

 Theology Today - Vol 46, No.3 - October 1989 - ARTICLE - The Grief of C. S. Lewis
A Grief Observed is closely connected with other Lewis texts, such as the first chapter of Surprised by Joy (1955), his first exercise in being "suffocatingly subjective" in print; the last chapter of The Four Loves (1960); and Letters to Malcolm (published in 1964, after Lewis's own death).
This "Platonism" is mediated in Western Christianity by Dante's love for his Beatrice and is crucial for understanding the last lines of A Grief Observed, for Joy is Lewis' sharp-tongued, witty, and intellectual Beatrice.
Lewis, A Grief Observed, 1961 (London: Faber, 1985), first published anonymously, no doubt to protect himself from being inundated with yet more correspondence, and of a profoundly stressful kind, while publishing to help others.

A Grief Observed contains his epigrammatic reflections on that period: "Your bid--for God or no God, for a good God or the Cosmic Sadist, for eternal life or nonentity--will not be serious if nothing much is staked on it.
For all of Lewis' intellectual reasonings and scholarly attainments, I find "A Grief Observed" to be his best work because it comes from the very heart of a man seeking to find the answers to life's hardest questions.
It is not a philosophical insight or an intellectual wrangling, but a spirit-filled work that lays bare the heart of a man who loved his wife completely.

In C. Lewis: Companion and Guide, released by Harper Colllns in the fall of 1996, Walter Hooper abruptly reverses his claim that Lewis's Grief Observed is fiction.
Marshall states in her introduction, "In his wonderfully anecdotal essay, Walter Hooper asserts that A Grief Observed is a carefully constructed' fiction: 'Lewis told me that he felt he had to make it sound autobiographical if it was to help the average man or woman who had lost husband or wife.""
Hooper devotes eight paragraphs of the essay to that position: "Considering how angry some people have been when I have told them that A Grief Observed is not straight autobiography, I will be amazed if this paper does not fan the flames.
