Absalom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a monument, which is in the king's dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom's monument."
And Absalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor bad: for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.
He himself, having long hair, was caught by his hair in the boughs of an oak-tree, and as David had strictly charged his men to deal gently with the young man, Joab was informed.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Absalom
Absalom turns the opportunity of this altercation with Joab to good account by pleading his own neglected and humiliated condition: I would rather die ignominiously, he argues, than have this rancour of the King against me all the days of my life.
Having injured the object of his passion, he forthwith begins to hate her, and sends from him the aggrieved maiden, who must be to him a constant reminder of his wrongdoing.
The sacred writer who sketches for us the career of Absalom (2 Samuel 13-18) lays stress upon the faultless beauty of the youth's appearance, and mentions in particular the luxurious wealth of his hair, which, when shorn, weighed over ten ounces.

 MAthesis
Yet, the Ten Commandments do not refer to incest, which in the story of Absalom and Amnon seems to be an evil act that deserves death, and in Faulkner the heaviest sin that deserves the eternal punishment Quentin painfully longs for.
Another son of David, Absalom, murders Amnon, his own brother, in order to punish his evil and avenge their sister’s rape.
Without the victimization of Amnon, or the punishment of incestuous desire, Absalom cannot come into being as the revenger, the one who reigns over the domain of the Law: moreover, the seduction does not attain to completion without/before the death of seducer.

GradeSaver: ClassicNote: Absalom, Absalom - Full Summary and Analysis
"Absalom, Absalom!" is the lamenting cry of King David in the second book of Samuel (18:33), upon hearing of the assassination of his beloved son.
It is useful to read the story of Absalom in the second book of Samuel--a dramatic story of dynasties, rebellion, incest, and death--as it is a direct influence on Faulkner's own tale, contains many of the same events, and is, on a first reading, infinitely easier to understand!
Before entering into an analysis of the first chapter of this book, it is helpful to begin with the title.

Teaching Faulkner, Southeast Missouri State University
As John Hagopian has pointed out, the Sutpen narrative parallels the biblical story of David and Absalom in the emphasis on "revolt, incest, and fratricide," but it differs in that Faulkner's David, unlike the biblical one, is unable to feel love and compassion for his rebellious son.
What impressed Faulkner primarily about the David and Absalom material was that it was a story that had been written and preserved through the centuries for generations of readers.
Just as the biblical allusion of the title extends Sutpen's regional, temporal story into the realms of the universal, the mythic, and the timeless, so too does the map that ends the novel.

Riding on his mule (a la the future messiah of the New Testament), Absalom is accidentally raised up to the scaffold of a great terebinth, his head and glorious Nazirite hair caught in the tree’s thick boughs (II Samuel 18:9).
This could have been enough, but the Bible exacts a symbolically gruesome punishment.
Nearly three millenia later William Faulkner would reformulate this story through the complex and tortuous narrative Absalom, Absalom!

Another view sees it as a Faulknerian commentary on how the lack of compassion, of love, of humanity (in Sutpen himself, in Rosa, in the Sutpen children) - all essential elements in Christianity - results in disaster.

Sutpen's ultimate failure is largely due to his racism - his unwillingness to honor his marriage to a woman who was part black, his use and ultimately abuse of slaves - and his racism led to one brother killing another, just as in the Civil War.
