Alexandre Dumas, père - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Because of their same name and occupation, to distinguish them, one is referred to as Alexandre Dumas père, (French for father) the other as Alexandre Dumas, fils (French for son).
Alexandre Dumas père wrote stories and historical chronicles of high adventure that captured the imagination of the French public who eagerly waited to purchase the continuing sagas.
Although Marie-Louise was unable to provide her son with much in the way of education, it did not hinder young Alexandre's love of books, and he read everything he could get his hands on.

The Fourth Musketeer by J. Lucas-Dubreton
She was not unaware of Alexander's fondness for Virginie Bourbier, his reconciliation with Mlle.
Dumas fell to earth again and grew expansive in listening to the story of "la chasse au chastre" at Marseilles, or the tale of the village of Cuges which had no water, or in telling these stories again himself with an extraordinary accent.
He summoned Alexander, shut him up in his own house under lock and key with the Memorial and several other documents—meanwhile sending Bell a bracelet to keep her quiet—and informed the author that he would not restore his freedom until the play was delivered.

Celebrated Crimes By Alexander Dumas, Pere : Arthur's Classic Novels
Dumas, in fact, wrote his 'Crimes Celebres' just prior to launching upon his wonderful series of historical novels, and they may therefore be considered as source books, whence he was to draw so much of that far-reaching and intimate knowledge of inner history which has perennially astonished his readers.
Indeed, although Alexander VI had repudiated the abuses of nepotism, he understood very well the part that was to be played for his benefit by his sons and his daughter; for he knew he could always count on Lucrezia and Caesar, if not on Francesco and Goffredo.
Dumas goes carefully into the dubious episodes of her stormy career, but does not allow these to blind his sympathy for her fate.

 Ex Libris Archives: Alexandre Dumas
We all know Dumas as the author of the Three Musketeers saga and the Count of Monte Cristo; in addition to these he wrote hundreds of other novels, only a few of which are available in English.
The major problem in finding Dumas' novels in English is finding good unabridged editions.
Most English editions of Dumas' work that are currently available are abridged; these should be avoided, in my opinion.
