 Gatto article
Grandfather, he writes, believed that history, evolution, and a saving grace found their best advocates in him and in men like him, in his family and in families like his, down to the close of time.
Müller would win the Nobel Prize, reduce his proposal to a 1,500 word Geneticists' Manifesto, and watch with satisfaction as 22 distinguished American and British biologists of the day signed it.
By 1917, the major administrative jobs in American schooling were under control of a group referred to in the press of that day as "the Education Trust." The first meeting of this trust included representatives of Rockefeller, Carnegie, Harvard, Stanford, the University of Chicago, and the National Education Association.

Underground Railroad American Civil War History
A wealth of photos, documents, and commentary by modern historians provides the broad lines of history, but it comes alive in the individual stories of conductors and passengers, among them abolitionist and historian William Still, called the "Father of the Underground Railroad," and Henry "Box" Brown, who mailed himself to freedom in a cargo crate.
The author does an excellent job of making this dark and complex chapter in our history understandable the students.
Operating without formal organization, participants in the Underground Railroad included both white and black abolitionists, enslaved African Americans, American Indians, and members of such religious groups as the Quakers, Methodists, and Baptists.

Underground History of American Education - Prologue [LONG] [Free Republic]
My book represents a try at arranging my own thoughts in order to figure out what 50 years of classroom confinement (as student and teacher) add up to for me. You'll encounter a great deal of speculative history here.
Despite its title, Underground History isn't a history proper, but a collection of materials toward a history, embedded in a personal essay analyzing why mass compulsion schooling is unreformable.

The "Dumbing Down" of American Education - RMHI
The close relationship between corporate monopolies and fascism is embodied in the definition of fascism appearing in the 1963 edition of the American Collegiate Dictionary:
American students' embarrassing ignorance of world geography, basic science and math, and declining literacy is the profitable subject of government committees, philanthropic foundations, corporate think tanks, armies of consultants, and educational bureaucracies, who all continually demand more resources and money even as the problem worsens.
It is important to distinguish the contemporary American educational system from public school systems in other nations that educate productive citizens who contribute to their nation's strength and well-being.

Editor's note: We ordered The Underground History Of American Education, which, Lord willing, will be reviewed in the next Examiner.
Those Americans, even farmers and mechanics, enjoyed a level of erudition, education, cultivation, aesthetic sensitivity, and elevation of character that is inconceivable today.
The tragedy is taking kids who probably would be very intelligent, productive members of society and teaching them nothing but how to pass tests.

The Underground History of American Education
While history is Gatto’s focus, it is the fate of all the compulsorily schooled children that concerns him the most.
Americans like Ben Franklin, George Washington, Abe Lincoln and Thomas Edison were independent, free thinkers.
Gatto’s conclusions are shocking, but they make sense and are backed up with hundreds of footnotes, references, and quotations.

Sudbury Maui - Selections from The Underground History of American Education
In his book, The Underground History of American Education, author John Taylor Gatto states that "the goal of real education is to bring us to a place where we take full responsibility for our lives...
The natural genius of the United States as explored and set down in covenants over the first two-thirds of our history has now been radically degraded and overthrown.
So rigid have American classifications become that our society has taken on the aspect of caste, which teaches unwarranted self-esteem and its converse - envy, self hatred, and surrender.
