Topic: Amores

 Diotima
Amores I: Ovid began writing the Amores at about eighteen years of age in 25 B.C.E. When he came to revise this five-book edition sometime after 10 B.C.E. into the three books we have, he apparently rearranged the order of the poems, roughly speaking, from pre-infatuation to disenchantment.
The first book of the Amores has the clearest structure as a book: it begins and ends with programmatic poems which correspond to each other and places the longest poem in the center.
He claims to have published a first edition of his love elegies in five books (between 19 and 8 B.C.E), which were later reduced by the poet to the three books of Amores which we have.

 salon :: :: movies :: review :: "Amores Perros", By Andrew O'Hehir :: Page 1
As for Steven Soderbergh, who's a fine craftsman, a sympathetic spirit, by all accounts a prince among directors and one who richly deserves his success and fame, well, there is one place he could make a movie this good: in his dreams.
From the accident, "Amores Perros" moves variously backward and forward in time through several stories about love and betrayal, about the ease with which people commit acts of violence and the difficulty they face in finding redemption.
But "Amores Perros" -- the phrase isn't easily translated, although "Love's a Bitch," the suggested English title, isn't bad -- is more than a breakthrough work for Mexican cinema.

3) Finally, "Amores" finally bookends with ("El Chivo"): the tale of a derelict hit man (Emil Echevarria) with an abiding love for stray dogs and his estranged daughter, whom he has not contacted since her infancy.
"Amores perros" is ever a gritty, believable tale about lives and decisions gone wrong.
2) ("Daniel y Valeria"): a comedown versus Part One, "Amores" next chapter orbits a supermodel (Goya Toledo) badly injured in a car wreck, and her successful, but guilt-ridden lover (Alvaro Guerrero) who deserts his family for their relationship.

Her view of the Amores as containing a narrative -- a story with plot and characters -- nicely recognizes, and begins to account for, some of the developments of book 3, which is less interested in love than readers of elegy expect.
Chapter 5 argues that Ovid uses the Amores to establish his own poetic immortality through the double narratives of his lover-character and his poet-character.
Overall, this book performs some valuable services to the study of the Amores, particularly in assuming throughout that Ovid knew exactly what he was doing and that these poems will be better understood if readers look at them for what they are and not for what they aren't (i.e., Propertius or Ovid's own Metamorphoses).

 AMORES PERROS
Each of the tales would be interesting enough on their own, but cobbled together as uniquely as they are, the film become a devastating story about fate and relationships.
Amores 's second tale, titled "Daniel and Valeria," focuses on a magazine editor and fashion model, respectively.
It turns out Cofi is one hell of a fighter, and Octavio makes mad money pitting him against other dogs in brutal (and illegal) fights.

 Ovid Amores
As in the previous poem ( Amores I.8.41-42), Venus and Mars are again paired (1-4, 29), and Ovid refers explicitly to their infamous affair (39-40).
Any husband who did not so punish such adultery was himself punished as a pimp.
Contrast this with the poet's advice in Amores I.4.

We also know from Amores 2.18.17-34, that another poet named Sabinus wrote poetic responses to some of the early Heroides.
The Amores follow in the footsteps of his older, contemporary elegists, Tibullus (ca.
In this way, Ovid was able both to give a nod to and to set himself off from his great predecessor (who had only just died when the first edition of the Amores appeared).

Publisher description for Library of Congress control number 97024003
The volume establishes a context for the recent reception of the Amores, and proposes an alternative approach to the collection by discussing recent trends in the discussion of imitation in Roman poetry.
Ovid's poetry has in recent years enjoyed a remarkable renaissance: in particular, there has been a surge of interest in the Heroides, the Fasti, and his exile poetry.
Ovid's Literary Loves is an imaginative approach to imitation in Latin poetry and makes a significant contribution to current discussions of the subject.

OFFOFFOFF film review AMORES PERROS Mexican movie by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu with Emilio Echevarria, Gael Garcia ...
Gonzalez Inarritu has taken an original story by Guillermo Arriaga and fashioned it into a tale that is gritty, complex, and brimming with edgy performances (Gael García Bernal as Octavio is especially good as is El Chivo's Emilio Echevarria).
In the third story, El Chivo (The Goat, on account of his flowing white beard) lives life as a hitman bum, pushing a shopping cart through these dust-colored streets escorted by his loyal pack of mongrels, mutts, and strays.
And he loves her baby too (he calls him Baldy).

 Amores Perros: Cinephiles Movie Review
Amores Perros takes the viewer to the streets of Mexico City and presents three sets of characters whose stories collide in a life-changing event: a terrible automobile accident, shot from three distinct angles and edited according to the characters' corresponding story and point of view.
In this sense, Amores Perros offers a provocative commentary on the deteriorated nature of humans.
In spite of the diversity of its characters, Amores Perros defines their stories clearly and infuses into them an equal degree of drama and suspense.

 Amores Perros
Amores Perros roughly translates to both 'dog's love' and 'love's a bitch.' Both figure prominently in the three interwoven stories within the movie.
Through each story, Inarritu holds steadfastly to his double themes.
A violent car accident takes place at the beginning of Amores Perros.

 amores perros
Actually, all three segments do; the title Amores Perros works out as a pun in the American translation -- "Love's a Bitch." It sure is. The movie's big theme is what we'll do for love, even when love won't do much for us.
But González Iñárritu is a more thoughtful filmmaker than Quentin Tarantino, whose best work slyly up-ends clichés and is deeply entertaining for that reason; González Iñárritu takes clichés and burrows around inside them, looking for the grain of truth -- the connection to reality -- that created them in the first place.
I've left out a lot here -- including the nature of the aforementioned central accident and exactly how it affects everyone -- only to keep Amores Perros a virgin experience for the first-time viewer; ideally, you should go into it knowing absolutely nothing except that the excruciatingly convincing dogfight scenes were, indeed, skillfully faked.

Spirituality & Health: Movie Review: Amores Perros
Commenting on Amores Perros, director Alejandro González Iñárritu makes reference to the Biblical themes in the three-part drama.
I recalled a quotation from Milan Kundera's novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being : "True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power.
Humankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude toward those who are at its mercy: animals." In Amores Perros, all of the characters except El Chivo fail this moral test and pay the consequences.

In Amores II 19 Ovid complains that his girl's husband does not keep a close enough eye on his girl; the man just makes it too easy.
our founding fathers: The mother of the twins, Romulus and Remus, whose name was Ilia (a word which in Latin means "groin" or "private parts"), was a Vestal virgin and therefore pledged to chastity for thirty years (see note to Amores III 7.21).
The underlying argument remains the same: the wise husband should grant his wife maximum freedom -- in II 19 because a watchful caution stimulates the lover; in this poem, because restraint stimulates the wife.

KDHX Film Review - Amores Perros
Amores Perros ' director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu said in a recent interview on NPR that he would translate the title more accurately as "love that hurts" or "love is tough." Both of these translations are more appropriate for what is also a tough movie to watch.
Amores Perros takes an unromantic look at betrayal, tragedy, and justice.
An Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Film, Amores Perros is often translated as "Love's a Bitch".

Review: Amores Perros (Love's a Bitch)
Amores Perros is more than just a strong debut; it's good, gritty filmmaking.
Amores Perros, like Quentin Tarantino's Oscar-nominated opus, deals with men and women who live on the seedy side of life.
Chivo's story plays out in the background for most of the film, until, during the final forty-five minutes, it is brought to the fore while the other tales are wrapped up on the periphery.

AMORES PERROS movie review (with photos and clips where possible)
With three stories to tell, Amores Perros runs long -- 154 minutes -- and the final segment isn't as intense as the dog-fighting opener.
Thus the title: Amores Perros ( Love's a Bitch).
We learn about the characters through their relationships with dogs.

Shockingly violent and darkly comic by turns, the Oscar-nominated Amores Perros ("Love's a Bitch") doesn't quite live up to the grandeur of its conception.

That said, you will be hard pressed to find a more eye-catching or provocative motion picture this year.

Alejandro Inarritu has his main characters weave in and out of all 3 stories expertly.
A car crash in Mexico City entwines three stories: in one car is Octavio, who has been entering his dog in fights to get enough money run off with his sister-in-law Susana; in the other car is Valeria, a supermodel who's just moved in with her lover Daniel, who has left his wife for her.
As the title suggests Amores Perros displays the intensity of love and how love effects all of the main characters.

Finally, there is an ex-guerrilla, Chivo (Echevarria), whose discovery of a lost dog inspires him to reunite with his own long-lost daughter.
That "v" word, however, is a bit of a trick here, however, as many of the characters are less than savory, or at least, we see them doing unsavory things (from "merely" lying to vicious murders, to just about everything in-between).
The obvious comparison here (which every critic seems to make) is to Quentin Tarantino, and specifically, Pulp Fiction.

But, as one character points out, "If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans."
As for the human element in "Amores Perros" (whose title translates as "life's a bitch"), we're talking about an unforgettable rogues gallery of Mexico City characters, high and low, all of them linked by the strange, ineffable forces of fate and circumstance.
That sense of conviction comes from the movie's characters who live their lives intensely, hoping against hope that they can succeed in spite of everything.

From there the tales flash backward and forward, straddle social classes, and casually intersect.
A movie that starts with the claim that no animals were harmed in its making suggests that said animals might be more sympathetic than its human characters.
For much of Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s prolonged, brilliant debut, Amores perros (translated as " Love Is a Bitch "), that is indeed the case; after a while, though, the humans grow almost as likable as, if more vicious than, their pets.

In any event, the dyeing of hair and the wearing of wigs was common in Augustan Rome, and this poem may be taken as a general reflection of fashion.
If Amores III 2 is best understood as a fantastic inner monologue, one may find a precursor of the style in this poem.
Many critics find the tone of the poem cruel and heartless, but it is not clear that we should imagine every word spoken directly to Corinna.

LA Weekly: Film Review: Dogs, Bodies
The great German philosopher Walter Benjamin once wrote that every document of civilization is also a document of barbarism — it’s a tenet for which Amores Perros seems made to order.
Pulsing with energy and wild style, it was directed by 37-year-old Alejandro González Iñárritu, a talented first-timer and former DJ who’s given his hometown of Mexico City a commercial beat to which the rest of the world can easily groove.
Ripping, cutting, killing — the dogs of the film’s nastily punning title tear into one another until their muzzles are foamy with gore.
