Arabian Nights Its Origins and Legacy - MiddleEastUK.com: Mosaic
The success of The Arabian Nights stories over many other forgotten folk tales may be due to their blend of popular themes; heroic and romantic adventures are littered with mystery, old wisdom and exciting struggles between good and evil.
Two of the most popular stories in The Arabian Nights are those of 'Shahriyar and Shahrazad', the first and main story, and 'Sinbad the Sailor'.
Although the subtleties of language are unfortunately lost in translation, the exotic and romantic imagery provided great inspiration for the Western travellers, writers, artists and poets of the 18th and 19th centuries whom we refer to as 'Orientalists'.

Every night after their marriage, she spends hours telling him stories, each time stopping at dawn with a cliff-hanger, so the king will commute the execution out of a desire to hear the rest of the tale.

 JewishEncyclopedia.com - ARABIAN NIGHTS:
Chauvin, in a special treatise on the Egyptian recension of "One Thousand and One Nights" (Brussels, 1899), has suggested that these Jewish tales and others were introduced by one of the last redactors, a converted Jew, probably the author of the "Story of a Man of Jerusalem," sometimes attributed to Abraham, son of Maimonides.
Shahrazad, in the Persian tradition, is the mother-in-law of Ahasuerus, who in the Biblical story also beguiles his nights by having tales read to him; his wives also hold office only for one night, until Esther obtains a more secure tenure.
De Goeje has suggested that the framework story of the whole collection, in which the queen Shahrazad averts execution by telling tales for one thousand and one nights, is the same story as that of the Biblical book of Esther.

 The Making of Arabian Nights
Shahrazad was the storyteller of the Arabian Nights tale.
I had always thought that the Arabian Nights mythos was fascinating--the djinni, sea serpents, thieves, heroes, deserts, oceans, magical treasures, and so on seemed perfect for Magic.
The wisdom of this decision was driven home by Arabian Nights, where I had four Djinns and four Efreets that obviously needed to be distinguished from each other.

The tale is very telling of the Arabian Nights' style and is one of the most fascinating of the stories.
The jinn, or what The Arabian Nights tales made popular as the Genie, is in Arabic mythology a supernatural being below the level of angels and devils.
Also known as The Arabian Nights' Entertainment, The Thousand and One Nights is by far the most famous work to come out from the Muslim world in the sphere of popular literature.

Guardian Unlimited Arts features Why composers are seduced by the Arabian Nights
Many for whom The Arabian Nights (the more familiar English title) were the stuff of childhood fantasy have returned to the collection, in whole or in part, as adults, only to find their preoccupations once more reflected in its contents.
The number of tales was apparently fixed at 1001 as early as the 10th century, as was the framing device of the familiar story of Scheherazade.
Composers have also been drawn to it, most notably Rimsky-Korsakov and Ravel; their major works inspired by it, directly or indirectly, are being performed at this year's Proms as part of its examination of the relationship between fairy tales and music.

 The Arabian Nights
The Arabian Nights were introduced to Europe by Antoine Galland in 1704-17; the earliest English version, translated from Galland’s French rather than from Arabic, came almost immediately (appeared 1706-08).
During the 18th century, "Sindbad," "Aladdin," and "Ali Baba" were published in chapbook editions; plots from these stories also became stock elements in English Pantomime, so that by the middle of the century most English children would have been fairly familiar with these particular tales.
Various translators into English created texts that contained different stories from different sources, depending on their particular purpose; the first scholarly edition of the work was not made until 1984 (Mack 1515).

The Age of the Galland Manuscript of the [1001] Nights: Numismatic Evidence for Dating a Manuscript? by Heinz Grotzfeld
From the dedication of Galland's translation of the Nights and from his correspondence, the circumstances of the discovery of the Nights are relatively well known.
[ABSTRACT:] The importance of the age of the Galland manuscript of the Nights derives from its being the oldest manuscript extant of this text.
Zotenberg's pioneering study not only introduced a pattern for understanding the differences and variations found in the MSS and printed editions of the Nights—variations in the repertoire of the stories, their order and in the wording of the texts—it also gave prominence to the very MS which Galland had purchased in 1701 from Syria.

The people of this city and of the four islands every night when it's half-passed lift their heads from the tank in which thou hast turned them to fishes and cry to Heaven and call down its anger on me and thee, and this is the reason why my body's balked from health.
Now of such instances are the tales called "A Thousand Nights and a Night," together with their far-famed legends and wonders.
