Balrog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Balrog seen in the Third Age used a sword and whip of flame in its battle with Gandalf.
Later, in the Fall of Gondolin, two Balrogs fell at the hands of Elves (though, according to the Book of Lost Tales 2, forty-eight Balrogs fell in Gondolin).
This does not appear in the published version of The Lord of the Rings, so it may or may not be intended as the definitive version.

 Other Creatures of Middle-earth
Another Balrog trapped Fingon with its fiery whip while Gothmog cleaved Fingon's helmet with his axe, and then the Balrogs beat him into the ground with their maces.
Their fundamental form appeared to be that of a man of great stature, but they were cloaked in shifting shadows and they had fiery cores.
So - unless someone encounters a Balrog in the modern world and lives to tell the tale - the question of whether Balrogs have wings remains open to each reader's interpretation.

Do Balrogs have wings? J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings Do Balrogs fly?
Tolkien used the word "Balrog" to describe a terrifying type of warrior he invented for THE BOOK OF LOST TALES, the first story of which was written in 1916/1917.
So, to learn about the nature and abilities of the Balrog of Moria one must dissect the various texts of THE HISTORY OF MIDDLE-EARTH, and the stories from THE BOOK OF LOST TALES and other pre-LOTR materials cannot be used to analyze the Balrog of Moria.
Tolkien doesn't say the flaming Balrogs ran through Hithlum, and they in their fiery state could not have ridden through it as in the older stories.

The Grey Havens - Balrogs: Can Balrog's Fly?
I also don't think that the arguments in favor of the Balrogs' ability to fly are 100% perfect, I, personally, lean more toward this conclusion.
I have discounted this possible interpretation on the grounds that, in the context, it seems more natural that the writer would have used the word "fleeing" instead of "flying" if he simply meant escape.
From Appendix A, Section III (Durin's Folk) included in the 1995 Harper Collins paperback edition of The Lord of the Rings, the initial discovery of the Balrog in Moria is described:

It is named after the demon servants of Melkor the Dark Enemy, who are referred to mainly in the back-story to J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings though one malign sleeper Balrog does survive long enough to be defeated by Gandalf.
Thousands of years later the Dwarves, mining the motherlode of Mithril which had made Khazad-dum the wealthiest of Dwarven cities in the Second Age, followed the vein north until they unwittingly freed the Balrog from its self-imposed prison.
There upon a ledge high above the world the wizard and Balrog faced each other for 3 days, and "those that looked up from afar thought that the mountain was crowned with storm.

VN Boards - is Sauron = Balrog or Sauron > Balrog?
Perhaps Sauron didn't want the Balrog to leave Moria until he himself was strong enough to be Morgoth's uncontestable successor on Middle Earth.
I postulate that among a corrupt evil group of beings such as the balrogs and Sauron authority must derive from power.
Perhaps, the Balrog personally prefered to delve deeper into his own dominion.

She is also said to have sworn off her former master and had made her own lair of evil in the unexplored Southern reaches of Valinor (where Melkor found her and cajooled her into sucking the life out of the trees).
She later tried to eat Melkor when he wouldn't keep feeding her, and only escaped because the Balrogs that remained deep in the pits of Angband heard his cries and rescued him.
