Actually, I find the solution to Y one of Queen's most fascinating, with the "blunt instrument" clue one of the most interesting and memorable in any Golden Age novel.
There are only four of these Barnaby Ross books about the actor/detective Drury Lane (Tragedy of X, Y, and Z, and DL's Last Case).
I decided to get all 4 of the Ross books before I began reading so there would be no break in the reads and have my memory fail me.

They have published twenty-five novels by Ellery Queen and four under the name Barnaby Ross, five books of their own short stories, many books of short stories by others, two books of radio stories, eight juvenile mysteries, and two volumes of detective bibliography, as well as editing Ellery Queen& Mystery Magazine.
This was an obvious pointer, and Dannay and Lee gave up the business careers they had planned and took to writing.
Manfred Lee lives in Roxburg, Conn., is interested in music, and is married and has eight children.

September 15th, 2002 09:27 PM "Tragedy of X" is the first and best of the Barnaby Ross books (there were only four).
It's a great cracking read, fairly clued, unusual murder method (the first one), least likely suspect, a memorable dying clue for the last murder -- victim's fingers crossed to form an X -- I'm not giving anything away, you still won't guess it until the murderer is unmasked.
The Tragedy of X, as "Barnaby Ross"-- some critics don't like this one, as too unbelievable.
