 Becky Sharp (1935)
BECKY SHARP was sold to TV only in a shortened BandW print or in CINECOLOR reissue prints.
Plot Summary: Set against the background of the Battle of Waterloo, Becky Sharp is the story of Vanity Fair by Thackeray...
BECKY SHARP, historically important as the first feature film in full, three-color TECHNICOLOR, has always fascinated me. It's history, however, is frustrating and disappointing.

Becky Sharp is the quintessential anti-heroine -- she's very greedy and cold, yet she's also so smart and determined that it's hard not to have a grudging liking for her.
Sharp is an effective name for Becky, exposing her character and incisive wit.
Many consider William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) a minor novelist who wrote in a time when George Eliot, Charles Dickens, and Anthony Trollope ruled the roost of British literature.

 Vanity Fair (2004)
Mira Nair's vision of Becky Sharp and the hypocrisy of Regency Britain is so far off the mark, she should be ashamed of herself for even using the title 'Vanity Fair.' All of Becky's backstabbing guiles have been down-graded to a form of pluckiness that completely fails to hit any mark of truth or irony...
Plot Outline: Growing up poor in London, Becky Sharp (Witherspoon) defies her poverty-stricken background and ascends the social ladder alongside her best friend, Amelia.
'Vanity Fair,' the novel, is a sharp and often hilarious social commentary.

In one extravagant sequence in her adaptation of Vanity Fair, Becky Sharp, played by Reese Witherspoon, and a bevy of more respectable dames swap their lace and gowns for skimpy silks in a Slave Dance performed for King George IV.
Credit her and her screenwriting team with paring 800 pages to a little more than two hours of screen time (though Rouben Mamoulian’s Becky Sharp, starring Miriam Hopkins, managed to get it down to 87 minutes in 1935, and a 1932 version with Myrna Loy clocked in at 78).
Indeed, implicit in Thackeray’s irony is the suggestion that had Becky been born a man, she might have been a match for Bonaparte, her knavery equally worshiped.

Director Mira Nair dusts off her favorite novel for a critique of class and race, English-style
So was Thackeray's take on England's colonial policies -- another theme that "Becky Sharp" ignored.
Nair's version features a prominent scene involving the character of Rhoda Swartz, a wealthy mixed-race woman who is set up to marry a white man. In "Becky Sharp," there is no such scene, even though Thackeray has it in his novel.
Nair dramatized the story of a New York Muslim who went missing in the attacks and was suspected of being a terrorist -- until his remains were recovered in the rubble of the World Trade Center disaster and authorities realized that he had tried to rescue people from the buildings.

 Premiere Magazine: Vanity Fair
In an early chapter of William Makepeace Thackeray’s groundbreaking mid-19th century novel Vanity Fair, one of its lead female characters, the treacherously pragmatic Becky Sharp, gleefully tosses a copy of Samuel Johnson’s English dictionary out the window of the carriage driving her away from the boarding school where she spent her (presumably miserable) formative years.
Things pick up, however, when the ineffable Eileen Atkins appears as Matilda Crawley, a snarky dowager who takes a liking to Becky while she’s ensconced in a group of more provincial Crawleys, upon which she takes Sharp under her wing and whisks her to London.
Jim Broadbent, as George’s father, an unspeakable social-climbing merchant, is a well-focused villain, but some fans of old television comedy might find his performance inadvertently funny, since he speaks in the same voice that Dave Thomas used playing Colonel Pickering in an SCTV sendup of My Fair Lady.

Vanity Fair is shot in bright and vibrant colors, which is often enhanced by the many flamboyant costumes that the characters are wearing.

Of the large cast, the biggest surprise is former 2-reel comedy star Billy Bevan, who makes a surprisingly effective Joe Sedley (the character played in the 1935 Becky Sharp by Nigel Bruce).
This 1932 version is perhaps the least known, probably because it has been updated to the 20th century and it isn't terribly good.

Besides maintaining Becky Sharp as the narrative spine of the film, I was keen to preserve the democratic swirl of the book and to that effect wanted to keep all the important subplots alive.
I wanted to preserve Dobbin as the moral center of the story, give Rawdon weight so that his love story with Becky could become credible and affecting, show Amelia's mettle so she doesn't sink into becoming the whimpering companion to Becky's fire.

 Review - Vanity Fair
Written by Andrew Davies, screen writer of the brilliant 1995 Pride and Prejudice miniseries, and directed by Marc Munden, this version also goes out of its way to make sure we notice how much the heroine Becky Sharp (Natasha Little) and "hero" Captain Rawdon Crawley (Nathaniel Parker) resemble Scarlett O’Hara and Cap’n Rhett Butler.
And when Crawley finally walks out on Becky (who realizes too late that she cares for him), we half-expect him to say, "Frankly, my dear....." Davies resists the temptation.
Davies also tries to soften Becky’s character, turning her one noble gesture at the end into an act of redemption and even suggesting a happy ending for her with rich nice-guy Jos, who doesn’t seem to mind that she’s an adventuress.
