Topic: Beregond

Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien Book Notes
Pippin is thinking of breakfast when a man named Beregond arrives to teach him the gate passwords and details of his duty.
Beregond laughs and tells him that they will be able to eat soon.
Beregond tells him that he has been summoned to Denethor's tower the following day.

 Beregond
Overall Appearance: Beregond is a broad-shouldered and barrel-chested man, with large and capable hands.
In terms of love, Beregond has a long history of failed relationships, the most recent of these being the unfortunate death of his wife.
Lastly, Beregond is not very well traveled, and has little knowledge of the topography of middle earth.

                                 m u s i ...
Beregond thought again that, yes, a halfling was no taller than his own son, but he seemed sturdy, and strong, and manly even, though Beregond was not so certain that Peregrin would take that as the compliment that he would intend.
When Beregond had first seen him, of course, and he had been certain that he never had seen one such as him before, he had not thought that he would find one with such wisdom and good cheer.
And they should come back to us, soon enough." He sat up, and set a light kiss upon Beregond's cheek.

 Stories of Middle-earth
Beregond would act in such a way that his son would be proud of him, no matter what came after.
But Beregond, I beg you--do anything you can to delay them.
The dark clouds from the East obscured his sight, but he saw the smoke-billows climbing toward the heavens and the distant red glow of flames far off.

 Fan-fiction by Marta
Beregond looked at his friend, trying to decide what argument would make him seem like less than a fool.
Suddenly a strange madness fell upon Beregond: whether from his own growing impatience or something outside himself or some combination of the two, he could not say.
The light died away, and Beregond saw the pool of blood at his feet.

 People of Gondor
Beregond was correct — it was the light of the palantir that he saw.
After the coronation of Aragorn, King Elessar on May 1, Beregond was brought before the King to receive judgement for leaving his post and for killing the porter and Denethor's servants on hallowed ground.
Beregond helped carry Faramir to the Houses of Healing and Gandalf entrusted him with the key to the Closed Door.

 [No title]
A few elves were there, but Beregond only recognized two of them save for Legolas, whom had been honored in front of all of Minas Tirith, whose name was common knowledge.
Beregond put a hand over his face and moaned in embarrassment.
Beregond felt the strongest desire to flee, but Faramir’s hand on his arm kept him from doing so.

West of the Moon - An Honest Man of Gondor
However, Beregond was a Guard of the Tower and an honest Man of Gondor; he confessed his mistake to Peregrin straightaway and from that moment treated him with the respect of a peer.
But Beregond's heart foundered then, out of its depth, and he fled, back to the Houses of Healing to wait for his master, the Lord Faramir, in whom he saw restraint, gentility, wisdom, and a noble heart: all things he could accept.
Beregond could not imagine that sort of abandon in his own bed, nor could he envision his dear Caoreth writhing in such pleasurable oblivion.

Lord of the Rings Fanatics Plaza: Thaim Athrabeth
Beregond, by his own confession, committed the crime of voluntary manslaughter, describing his impulse and lack of reflection, “‘This deed I shall ever rue,’; he said; ‘but a madness of haste was upon me, and he would not listen, but drew sword against me’;” (The Return of the King, The Pyre of Denethor).
Even as the city is breached, Beregond has abandoned his post at a time when he is most desperately needed, “Thrice he [the Lord of the Nazgul] cried.
The king Elessar pronounced his departure from the laws when he declared, “‘Beregond, by your sword blood was spilled in the Hallows, where that is forbidden.

 Penance
And Beregond obeyed, quickly, numbly, but not before his mind was irrepairably branded with the sight of strong fingers clenching on stubbled jaw and a thick heavy cock shoved into Faramir's mouth.
Boromir's entire attention was upon his brother, burning bright with unholy lust...and when Faramir raised his own gaze to meet it, Beregond was stunned to see nothing but the lost desperate look of a boy seeking approval.
He knew this man. This "boy" was the Steward's other son, Faramir.

And then, he found himself hoping that his third child would turn out to be a girl; one, in fact, who took after her Gondorian blood rather than that of the Rohirrim.
Nearly mournfully, he set his quill aside, leaving the account unfinished as the events were the same.
At his elbow was a Dwarf of black hair and beard carrying a great battle ax and a shield nearly equal his height.

[Beregond(#19834)] Chuckling now, instead of being angered by the words as one might expect, Beregond looks upon the cloaked man with something akin to pity in his eyes, standing then in silence as his expression grows more pained with the sergeant's attack.
The man makes no attempt to run as Beregond speaks his order.
There is a blinding flurry of white as the cloak too is flung at the men's faces.

This is a good sign I think (I hope).

 The Bagend Bugle Characters: Beregond
Beregond was a companion of Pippin's while he was at Minas Tirith.
Beregond killed the porter guarding Rath Dinen and two others who would not let him through to save Faramir from death.
Beregond son of Baranor was a man of arms in the Third Company of the Citadel, in the Guard of the Tower of Gondor.

 Beregond - Planet-Tolkien.com
I also love Beregond, and I think Val made many good points about him and Faramir.
This nature would mean a lot to the men around him, and hence Faramir became well loved.
Beregond would have watched Faramir growing up, and so would know much about him, and with Faramir's nature, a soldier who had been close to him for that length of time would be known to him also.

This part of the tale was much more detailed on in the books, which gave the character the opportunity to develop.

Also, the spirit of his act of selflessness was captured through the already-developed character of Pippin."

 Hope & Memory    . . .    The Official Pippin/Beregond Fanlisting
They meet each other in book three of the trilogy, Return of the King, as both are Guards of the Citadel in Minas Tirith.
This fanlisting is for the relationship between the two Lord of the Rings characters, Peregrin Took and Beregond.
It's such a shame that Beregond's character did not make it to the movies, although I think I see him in the character who goes by Irolas, played by Ian Hughes.

Though assigned to Boromir's personal guard in the early days of his service to the White Tower, Beregond's greatest and overriding loyalty is to Denethor's other son, Faramir, under whom he learns his trade.

It's possible that Decipher simply took a random character of the movie and associated him with a character from the book, but who knows.
I also figured that gondorian captain was Beregond, even if they didn't mention his name nor give him a great importance.
I would like to think he is Beregond, as he's a guard of the Citadel.

I wish that they had decided to keep the character of Beregond.
This would have introduced us to the men of the city; as it is they remain ciphers unlike the Rohirrim whom we get to know and care about.
In fact, the battle scenes had some good set pieces, but they don’t hang together well as a whole.

A third option, especially good with split companies when influence is low, is to have a few decent fighters, either on their own or with a weak character or two.
This modifier is nicely dealt with if his company forms a Fellowship, and with other characters with similar minds, you can pull off a Fellowship while having another company adventure elsewhere.
Others are strong in defense, the defeat the forces of Sauron when the forces come near.
