Topic: Characters from Dune

 Fictional character
King Lear (Shakespeareanan character who does not recognize the only one of three daughters who love him; he is undone by his blindness to her, Cordelia's, love)
In Immortality by Milan Kundera, the author references himself in a storyline seemingly separate from that of his fictional characters but at the end of the novel, Kundera meets his own characters.
The most extreme ways of reading fictional characters would be to think of them exactly as real people or to think of them as purely artistic creations that have everything to do with craft and nothing to do with real life.

 Dune Novels
A lot of familiar characters from Dune are present in this novel, plus a plethora of new faces.
Dune Messiah chronicles the attempts of the Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild and Emperor Shaddam’s daughter (now wife of Paul Atreides) to bring about Paul’s downfall.
However, this does not stop him from attempting to lay subtle traps for House Atreides nor does it deter him from seeking vengeance against the Bene Gesserit witches who infected him.

 Dune
One rather witty and insightful view of Dune claims that, "The central tale that orders and focuses the satisfying complexity of Herbert's secondary universe is the maturation of Paul Atreides: a skinny, fifteen-year-old boy evolves into Emperor of the Universe," (Miller 21).
Dune tells a story about a man forced to grow up too early.
Nearly every character in the book, however, commits selfish, depraved acts that strike the reader as atrocious.

The parallel story of Farad'n, the grandson of Emperor Shaddam (who was defeated by Paul), also deepens the meaning of the story and its consideration of power.
Of the twins, Leto has become the ruler of the galactic empire, in a new kind of body that is not quite human.
In the book, the chapter headings are "excerpted" from various books by Irulan (with one or two exceptions, like a preface by Stilgar to a book by Irulan), mostly about Paul.

Dune: House Atreides, published by Bantam Books, is currently available in paperback.
The presence of the name Kevin J. Anderson on the front cover should have warned me off -- the man just cannot write and I don't know who the hell told him that he can -- but having read a few Brian Herbert books, I at least expected some kind of...
And the chance to actually be there, to be able to experience the foundation of the story when the events were set in motion, was supposed to be something of a highlight of my month (the curse of the life-less.) And what did I get?

Unable to rely on star power - with the exception of WIlliam Hurt, whose Duke Leto is subtle and cunning - the director in my viewing was freed to construct his own vision of the great novel.

Frank Herbert, the author of Dune, knew this quote was true because he carefully planned his epic masterpiece before he started writing.
This is clearly derived from "Sayyed” meaning "master.” Both the Ottoman Sultan of Turkey and the Shah of Iran once had the Persian title Padishah, which means “sovereign.” Shaddam IV, Emperor of the Known Universe, uses this title (Baheyeldin).
Herbert included the themes of human evolution and human survival, subjects with which he was fascinated.

Winner of both the Hugo and Nebula awards as best novel, the original "Dune'' is a book which belies the notion that SF is merely a literature of escapism.
Set 1,500 years after the death and transformation of Emperor Leto II (as told in "God Emperor of Dune''), "Heretics'' finds yet another Duncan Idaho (a ghola or genetic recreation of the original Duncan) being trained by the Bene Gesserit for a role in an unrevealed scheme.
Like the "Star Fleet Technical Manual" and a number of similar tie-ins, "The Dune Encyclopedia" takes itself very seriously, presenting itself as a compilation of records and artifacts found in the God Emperor's personal library at Dar-es-Balat.
