 Refracted Light: Coraline
Coraline doesn't find a fabulous destiny or telepathic unicorns; she finds a mirror replica of her home, and waiting in it are her "other mother" and "other father," who want her to stay with them so they can love her and play with her forever.
Coraline risks her life and soul to save people who are profoundly imperfect but whom she still loves deeply.
All she has to do is let them sew black buttons over her eyes, like the ones they have over theirs.

 Excessive Candour
So Coraline is the child in the fairy story who is given a task or three to accomplish, and through her success defeats the wicked parody mother, and reclaims her family and her world.
If Coraline had been a tale of horror, we would have expected her to have been dragged (as though by a hook) through what was not a portal at all but a cloaca, a outgushing gape of the Bad Place Within, which befouls the protagonist on contact.
Memes of this sort are most often found in tales of horror, but it is the peculiar magic of Coraline that, despite the horrific things that almost happen to its protagonist, the tale is not horror but fantasy (dark fantasy perhaps, but this is cookie-cutting).

Kidsreads.com - CORALINE by Neil Gaiman
Coraline meets the ghosts of several other children who had been kidnapped hundreds of years ago, and she realizes that her both her body and spirit are in danger.
The "other mother" wants to keep Coraline there forever, and her intentions are hardly loving or parental.
This beautifully written, dark fairy tale finally acknowledges the underestimated and forgotten maturity of most young people; Gaiman isn't afraid to write a scary fantasy for children looking for more than just Disney-esque dragons and grounds-keeping giants.

Review : Coraline by Neil Gaiman - Children's Books
I enjoyed the development of Coraline from what appears to be naivety in the beginning of the book to absolute courage and cleverness at the end.
She's so bored in fact that she begins counting the doors and windows in her house and that's when she discovers the 14th door, which is locked.
Gaiman, who wrote this book for his daughter, says he wanted to have a girl heroine and wanted it to be "refreshingly creepy." He succeeded on both counts.

SF REVIEWS.NET: Coraline / Neil Gaiman
Coraline, a dark children's fairy tale readable in about an hour and a half, is an interesting book for Neil Gaiman to follow up American Gods with.
Yes, Coraline proves to be a girl of pluck and resourcefulness, but when Coraline has her final showdown with the evil here in the real world, that's when fantasy really does take over.
Exploring the flat, Coraline finds only one locked door, which her mother soon shows her leads nowhere; it was bricked over when the house was converted into flats.

 Coraline
The "other mother" captures Coraline's parents, and she goes through a brief series of quests to rescue them (and also the souls of three children who are injected into the narrative really as something extra for her to do).
The initial tension in Coraline is that her parents are too busy to pay attention to her, and cook meals that she doesn't like; the attraction of the "other mother" is that she promises love, and attention, and good food.
The prose is graceful, and the characters of Coraline and her parents nicely observed.

Coraline is an engaging heroine with the kind of natural curiosity that makes us we understand how her distracted parents simply would not be enough to keep her happy in a strange place on a rainy day.
Once Coraline goes through that passageway, she enters a world where nothing is quite right.
Where Coraline fails its intended audience is in the fleshing out of the story.

USATODAY.com - Little 'Coraline' opens door to an 'other' world
Neil Gaiman, award-winning author of American Gods and the Sandman series, breaks from writing adult fairy tales to bring fans Coraline, the tale of a bored little girl who, while exploring her family's new apartment, discovers a door that opens to a sinister world.
Gaiman skillfully tells this spine-chilling tale from Coraline's perspective.
This sensible girl never questions what the "other" mother is or why it has chosen to torment her.

 Neil Gaiman, Coraline
The tale sweeps you away into his strange otherworld, where nothing exists outside of the realm of the other-mother, and Coraline must solve the mysteries posed by the disappearance of her parents and the appearance of three ghost children.
This book is recommended for children ages 8 and older, but I would strongly suggest that parents read this book first (well, for your own enjoyment too!) before deciding if it is right for your child.
I loved and enjoyed Coraline thoroughly, and anyone who liked Neverwhere will find this just as fascinating.

Things take a turn for the even-worse when Coraline meets the ghosts of children the other mother has "loved" in the past, and realizes what her own fate will be if she doesn't defeat the creature.
Being a sensible child, Coraline calls the police, and explains the whole situation to them.
But before I get to the book in more detail, I'd like to say something about the author, and why Coraline is his crowning accomplishment.

Guardian Unlimited Books By genre Review: Coraline by Neil Gaiman
This is the best point of view from which to tell a story about a child: the telling voice is an adult's, so it can plausibly observe and say things a child would not, but all the sympathy is with the child.
Neil Gaiman made his name as a writer of graphic novels, but he showed himself to be a skilful novelist of the text-only sort, too, with American Gods, an exceptionally original fantasy-horror story.
And so begins a struggle for Coraline's soul.

Coraline goes though it to discover a world just enough unlike her own to be disturbing.
The U.S. edition of Coraline is graced with the magnificent and layered artwork of Dave McKean (who did covers for Gaiman's Sandman series as well as the illustrations for The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish) while the British edition has no illustrations at all.

Then maybe we would have a better understanding of who Coraline was and how/why Coraline was able to find the clues and make the decisions she did in the time span it took her to do so.
However, I attribute that to the fact that it is a children's book and therefore, the author wanted it to be kept shorter.
I would have loved more information on Coraline and the other characters before jumping right into the story.

Coraline is an excellent book that contains every quality a good book should contain and more.
To make creepy creepier, Coraline has been illustrated masterfully in scritchy, terrifying ink drawings by British mixed-media artist and Sandman cover illustrator Dave McKean.
British novelist Gaiman (American Gods; Stardust) and his long-time accomplice McKean (collaborators on a number of Gaiman's Sandman graphic novels as well as The Day I Swapped My Dad for 2 Goldfish) spin an electrifyingly creepy tale likely to haunt young readers for many moons.

"Coraline" is a book that can be read quickly and enjoyed deeply, one likely to lure many readers back for a second or third go-round.
After getting away from these bizarre creatures, Coraline discovers that her real mother and father have been stolen by the more-than-a-little-mad other mother.
Like "The Amazing Maurice," it features a cat that can talk when it wants to, but the rats that play a small part in the tale are far less charming and far more menacing than Pratchett's.

 : RevolutionSF - Coraline : Review
The moral of the story is clear enough, as it ought to be in a book written for children; but that doesn't detract from the charm in Gaiman's language or his gift for evocative scenery and wholly human characterization.
Gaiman is famous for his work in dark modern fantasy, having earned critical praise throughout the 1990s for his Sandman comics and prose and the BBC miniseries Neverwhere, for which he wrote the screenplay and novelization, not to mention his recent hit American Gods.
Alternately whimsical, creepy, charming and dreamy, it is written with elegant prose perfectly suited to its audience, simple in structure and language without ever condescending to the reader.
