 MSN Encarta - Dracula
This spine-tingling tale about the mysterious Count Dracula, king of the vampires, was published in 1897.
Dracul means “the devil” in Romanian, and dracula is “son of the devil.” They were fierce rulers.
Like all vampires, Count Dracula is able to come to life each night by sucking the blood of living people.

Dracula was later unleashed upon Wallachia with Turkish backing as their candidate for the Wallachian throne (1448) but his brief reign was quickly ended by John Hunyadi and he was forced to flee to Moldavia.
Dracula was opposed by Dr. Druid, whom he defeated, and went on to face Mockingbird as her teammate Iron Man attempted to defuse the Life-Bomb.

 Count Dracula's Legend
Count Dracula, a fictional character in the Dracula novel, was inspired by one of the best-known figures of the Romanian history — Vlad Dracula, nicknamed Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler) — who was a ruler of Wallachia (1456-1462).
Vlad, who was definitely not the kind of man to kill himself, managed to escape the siege of his fortress by using a secret passage into the mountain.
According to the legend, this is when Dracula's wife, in order to escape capture, committed suicide by hurling herself from the upper battlements, her body falling down the precipice into the river below — a scene exploited by Francis Ford Coppola's production.

But what seems to have attracted Stoker was a footnote in which Wilkinson states that "Dracula in Wallachian language means Devil." Stoker supplemented this with scraps of Romanian history from other sources (which he carefully listed in his notes) and fleshed out a history for his Count Dracula.
This has led some to conclude that Stoker's physical description of Count Dracula is actually based on this portrait of Vlad.
For a much more detailed (and fully documented) version of this argument, see Chapter 1 of my book Reflections on Dracula, my essay in Dracula: The Shade and the Shadow, or a full section of my book Dracula: Sense & Nonsense.

The popular image of Dracula is of a blood-sucking vampire, who snoozes in a coffin and turns into a bat when the sun goes down owes much to Bram Stoker who created this blood-thirsty Nosferatu based on the equally gory heroics of a real Romanian Prince in his novel published in 1897.
