 The Aging of Cirdan
He chided himself for not waiting for the other Teleri, for there was no one who had seen his disappearance under the water.
Cirdan felt as if he were floating leisurely on his back upon the still waters of Cuivienen and watching the stars above him.
As Cirdan had expected, the lords returned with Orome to Cuivienen, and they spoke before their people and counseled them to heed the summons of the Valar and remove into the West.

It's All in the Family: The Elweans and Ingweans - Suite101.com
Imin was an individual who awakened at Cuivienen, and his wife Iminye lay beside him.
He says nothing about who among the three Elf-kings may have awakened at Cuivienen.
But the text doesn't say he awakened there.

 Kryptic Tales of Middle-earth - Suite101.com
Middle-earth's first ghost stories were probably the long-forgotten tales the Elves made up about Melkor's monsters before Orome discovered their home at Cuivienen.
How real would the tales of wolf-Sauron and Draugluin, father of were-wolves, and Thuringwethil the bat-hamed messenger of Sauron, and Gorlim the Unhappy's ghost have seemed to the generations of Men and Elves who grew up early in the Second Age?
The early Elves were rather unsophisticated when compared with their Eldarin successors.

MeR: The next step (E Teoni)
We knew no time, save by the growth of the life around us.
Yet what more light could they need, when the glory of the naked stars shone down upon them?
This was a very controversial story, and I can't believe I wrote it.

 Silmarillion Storybook
The lake in Middle-Earth where the first Elves awoke, and where the Gods first found the Elves.
The realm in which King Thingol lived, though he was the king of all the Elves that remained in Middle-Earth.
The eldest son of Finarfin; founder and King of Nargothrond, for which he was named Felagund (‘Lord of Caverns’); redeemed his oath to Barahir by accompanying Beren on his quest; slain in defense of Beren in Sauron's dungeons.

When the world was created and it were only the stars that filled heaven's field, the elves were awakened at the lake Cuivienen in the East of Middle Earth.
Once they found that the elves had awoken, they asked them to move west and live with them in safe Valinor.
On their way they saw many new things, and soon their hearts were captured by the rushing waters of the Anduin river.

Upon realizing the threat of evil Melkor, the Valar summoned the Elves to come to Valimar where they would be (theoretically) protected from his threat.
The name meant 'the Wise' (but wise in the sense of possessing knowledge, not in the sense of possessing sagacity, sound judgment.) [ My note: Galadriel was Noldor, as was Feanor who later created the Silmarils.
Keep in mind a bit of history; this starts out way before the First Age and before Men, when the Elves still dwelt around Cuivienen, the lake where they first awoke.

 Finwe's Older Brother
Nor was this question resolved among the Valar, who nevertheless kept their own counsel and abstained from any debate with the Quendi.
For this reason, the people of Cuivienen named him Onwe, which in that language means, one who is listless.
Onn was also known for his extremely unusual pet, a dog named Lworg, a very proud creature.

 Quendi
And while they dwelt yet silent by Cuivienen their eyes beheld first of all things the stars of heaven.
It is told that as Varda ended her labours, and the heavens were lit with her Stars, the Children of Earth awoke, the Firstborn of Iluvatar.
Therefore they have ever loved the starlight, and have revered Varda Elentari abova all the Valar.

 Nightly.Net: What is Goldberry?
Goldberry and her mother could also be Elves.
The Ents might have encountered people like Tom and Goldberry, but unless those people attempted to distinguish themselves from Elves and Men, why should the Ents have thought they might be anything else?
Tom could, of course, simply be an ancient Elf who had wandered out of Cuivienen before Orome led the Eldar west.

And when Orome lokked upon them he was filled with wonder, as if they were things unforseen and unimagined; and he loved the Quendi, and named them the Eldar, the People of the Stars."
The three Elves from Cuivienen are speaking for the first time before the council of the Valar.
Of most interest, IMO, in this passage is the period of 335 years that the Elves lived next to Cuivienen before they were discovered by Orome.

She had taken a liking to him and made him her own, her own token of purety of Middle Earth."...Yeah.
Special Possessions (if any): "Nimrodel wears the Head Peice of Mirkwood, the ring of Cuivienen and the necklace of Lorien given to her by Legolas, her father and Lady Galadriel." She also has a horse named Leowyn.
Well protected within its walls in the East, she stayed under the care of her father, never knowing her mother is. Her father told her nothing of her mother.

 Aimless - No Known Destination
A Finwe story, dashes of life at Cuivienen and his condition as a King in Aman.
Of what nature was the bond that attached him to his eldest son so strongly?
Young Feanor meets his mother-in-law and brothers for the first time; the whole family goes picnicking, and Feanor plays a strategy game with Fingolfin.

 The Rangers of Thintaur
However they were a close knit race of elves, so when a large portion of nelyar looked set to leave Cuivienen, many more among the Nelyar decided to come with them rather then be seperated.
The elves are a mighty and beautiful race with a complex and intriguing history, that has captivated the imagination of many.
Most of the Nelyar wanted to say in middle-earth.

 Cuivienen
The Awakening of the Elves took place in very ancient times, during the Years of the Trees, and Cuivienen is known to have been destroyed (perhaps by natural forces) since then.
Tolkien, Cuivienen is the land where the Quendi or Elves awoke.
Its name ( cuivie-nen) means 'water of awakening,' and it is said to have been on the shore of a large gulf in the inland sea of Helcar in the far east of Middle-earth.

 The Shire Fellowship
You are so correct when you say that anyone who has not read the Silmarillion is missing out, i personally think it is the best of Tolkien"s work...and you are correct about the Cuivienen.
It's not said if Sauron continued his master's work, and enslaved the remaining Elves at Cuivienen, but I doubt it.
They later spread through all Middle Earth and even further...

The Reading Room Lord of the Rings Reading and Writing Workshop
When the Sons of Fëanor attacked the Exiles of Gondolin, Elrond and his brother Elros (both at that time small children) were carried off, but later found near a waterfall; Elrond was discovered in a cave behind the fall - hence "Elf of the Cave." In other texts it has been interpreted as Star King.
Elrond is descended directly from the only two known marriages of Eldarin elves with humans in elven history.
Elrond is directly descended from Finwe, the leader of the Noldor from the elves' place of awakening (Cuivienen), and the King of the Noldor in Aman, the ancient blessed land of the west beyond the great sea (often referred to as the Blessed Realm).

Meneltir awoke to the songs of many birds.
The Valar summoned the Elves to come into the West, and after the Elves&; three ambassadors returned and spoke for departure, the greater part of the Elves were swayed.

Their story is thus: When Oromë came to the land of Cuivienen, where the Elves had come into being, and dwelt and summoned them to the land of Valinor, they were suspicious of him.
In due time, Elwe, Finwe and Ingwe returned to Cuivienen, and told the Elves of the glory of Valinor, and there befell the Sundering of the Elves.
Three of the Elven tribes elected to send their leaders to Valinor to investigate.

 ~Elpinoine~
In several notes and letters, Tolkien referred to them as separate characters, although in his books, he inferred that the two Glorfindels are one and the same.
Presumably, he followed Fëanor to Middle Earth, and went into Turgon's service.
On down the line is Elrond, in whose service we find Glorfindel in during the Third Age.

But they know nothing of the Valar as yet.
Knowing where the Elves live, the Valar can now set a guard around Cuivienen while they tear up the earth to destroy Utumno and capture Melkor, as they were afraid to do earlier.
On Orome's return the Valar finally manage to make up their minds about Melkor.
