Topic: Denethor

 Denethor
Denethor was familiar with much of the contents of the archives, but this particular scroll was unknown to him, and Gandalf did not share his concerns with the Steward.
Denethor burned himself alive and he tried to take his youngest son Faramir with him, but while Denethor perished in flames, Faramir survived and became Steward to Aragorn, King Elessar.
Denethor was a proud man, and he believed himself destined to lead Gondor in its darkest hour.

 Denethor's Journal
Denethor was pacing the hallways when the news was delivered to him.
Denethor stared at a sheet of paper, frowning to himself as he tried to make sense of it.
His speech made, Denethor fell silent, awaiting the answer of his Lord, one hand seeking the hilt of his sword, feeling its touch like the grasp of a familiar friend.

Denethor was certain that he’d been discreet enough with Boromir and he knew that Boromir had never spoken of their relationship, to his siblings least of all, but it appeared as if Eowyn might know somehow exactly what was going to be expected of her upon Boromir’s departure.
All the accounts, with the exception of the ones written in Denethor’s hand, warned that every time the monster was summoned it took away some vital bit of soul from the one who had called it.
If the careful lines of ink were to be believed, Eowyn was a short chant away from calling a demon that would grant her fondest wish, a demon that had been bound to the service of the royal family of Gondor since the end of the last age.

 E2: The Black Diamond
Denethor's rebuilding took comparatively little time and a market for dwarven goods expanded as the Dominions asserted themselves once more.
Even the Arboreans to the west are entitled to their spokesperson, usually a dwarf well-traveled through the Misty Wood and familiar with elven customs and traditions.
Even Zahnah'deem strongly associates the support of Liasiardites to the state, but in the holds, every individual is expected to make a decision for himself on what god to follow and to what extent.

Halrloprillalar's Fan Fiction White Tower, Silver Tree
Denethor had never thought of this, with a man, would not have expected this.
But then, Celeborn was no man. Denethor shuddered under Celeborn's hands and longed to touch him in return.
It was smooth and soft between his fingers, but also seemed strong, like a silk rope, and Denethor knew he wouldn't be able to pluck it out, even if he dared to try.

You Do Not Understand - Denethor II
When the Grey Wanderer backed the claims of Thorongil, Denethor realized exactly what was taking place - the man was a descendant of one of the northern noble lines, and wished to make the claim of Arvedui who had been turned down by the Steward of that age.
Finduilas alone seemed to love him, and he began to depend upon her support more and more so that when she finally left him alone once again he found himself without comfort as the growing darkness drew near even without hope.
Alone and surrounded by the threatening reminders of Sauron's power far from the sea she loved, Finduilas began to wither like a flower set upon a stone at midday.

 Aragorn vs. Denethor
'Denethor II was a proud man, tall, valiant, and more kingly than any man that had appeared in Gondor for many lives of men; and he was wise also, and far-sighted, and learned in lore.
He truly believed a) that Gandalf was really trying to be in charge b) that Aragorn's claim was unlawful and c) that Gandalf, through his stupidity in entrusting the Ring to Frodo, and Faramir, through his kindness, had let Sauron recover the One Ring, thus dooming Minas Tirith and Middle-earth.
Aragorn's challenge was twofold: help Middle-earth defeat Sauron, and prove to Gondor that, even though he was not king, he deserved the throne they had refused to give his ancestor Arvedui.

 Pyre of Denethor Discussion, Lasselanta
I wonder if Denethor was ever able to have the faith in himself that a simple hobbit like Sam demonstrates when tempted by the Ring at Cirith Ungol.
It's said Denethor wisely declined to use the palantir for a long time, knowing he wasn't powerful enough, but his wisdom failed.
Denethor says: "But if doom denies this to me, then I will have naught: neither life diminished, nor love halved, nor honour abated."

 Denethor II
Denethor was a self-willed ruler, who did not allow others to interfere with the affairs of his kingdom and family.
In his hand was a white rod with a golden knob… Pippin saw his carven face with its proud bones and skin like ivory, and the long curved nose between the dark deep eyes; and he was reminded not so much of Boromir as of Aragorn.”
We meet Denethor in “The Return of the King”.

To have it happen for the first time over a matter such as this… That thought caused such an ache in his heart and blow to his spirit that he stood frozen, his eyes locked on the blood that still stained his fingers.
Never in his wildest dreams had he imagined that Denethor would do that to his own son.
Turning his head, his eyes locked on Faramir's, and he could see the compassion in the man's eyes.

SF-Fandom - Did Aragorn know about Denethor using the Palantir?
Nevertheless, as Elenmir observes, Sauron, ever skillful in sowing dissension among his foes, would be glad to pour salt on that wound.
Of that use, he mainly speaks of his encounter with Sauron, although he goes on to say that once he had wrenched the view free of Sauron's control he "learned many things".
Aragorn took away Sauron's control of the Orthnac stone, but I doubt it would have shown him anything relating to Denethor in Minas Tirith, since it wasn't focused there.

Be quick!" "Denethor™ has gone to the tombs, and he has taken Ariellë, and he said life is a gas, and he's waiting for the angels or something.
Besides, is it not a law in the City that those who wear the sailor's shirt must stay in the Citadel?" "Denethor™ has gone mad!" cried Pipsqueak.
Pipsqueak gazed upon it with wonder, but Gandalf began to feel uneasy about and hoped fervently that the uneasiness did not show on his shifty face.

Of his family, we know that Faramir's mother, Finduilas (named after the elvish princess of whom more is written in the story "Of Turin Turambar" in the Silmarillion) died after twelve years of marriage, seeming to wither in the guarded city so close to the horror of the shadow.
Finduilas died about four years after, and caused Denethor to become a more grim and silent man, who preferred being alone.

 A Character Category for Denethor
This is a larger number than the 44 stories in the Treebeard section, 43 in Lothiriel and about 21 in Celeborn; characters for whom there are sections already.
Currently in the archive there are approximately 70 stories where Denethor could be considered one of the two main characters (the figure is far greater if we consider all the stories where he is mentioned in the description, though these are likely to be small appearances in Boromir or Faramir stories).
Of course not every fic where Denny is mentioned will have him as one of the two "searchable" characters, since others (often his sons) claim those two top places.
