AuthorStore Reviews: The Diarist and the Baby Boomer - Book Reviews, Authors, Literati
Out of the corner of his eye, the Diarist watches the man. The Boomer keeps looking back at the Diarist, watching him as if he might learn the secret of the machine by studying a man clicking away at a keyboard.
The Diarist considers this, considers the man's attitude.
The Diarist takes no pity on him and mercilessly assails the Boomer with acronyms.

That being said, Ellis' book is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in fine writing and a purely subjective (and, as noted, sometimes hypocritical) account of life as it was lived and observed by Ellis in the 20th century.
Retired journalist Ellis (The Epic of New York City) has spent a lifetime annotating his life: his diary, started on a bet in 1927 when he was 17, has earned him inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest in the world.

"Introduction" to The Diaries of George Washington
The diaries of George Washington are not those of a literary diarist in the conventional sense.
Even when familiarity modifies our view of the man, and we find him warmer and more intense than we knew, given to wry humor and sometimes towering rage--even then we do not find in these pages what we have come to expect of a diary.
No one holding the long-prevailing view of Washington as pragmatic and lusterless, a self-made farmer and soldier-statesman, would expect him to commit to paper the kind of personal testament that we associate with notable diarists.
