 Neil Gaiman
Dream Country is the first story arch made entirely up of different tales.
The tales never focus on the Sandman himself, but tell us about the nature of tales and dreams just as keenly as the ones where he is in the center.
They are Destiny, Death, Dream, Desire, Despair, Delirium who was once Delight, and Destruction, the one who turned his back on his duties.

 Sandman
Sandman (referred to as such only in the series title), the creator and caretaker of dreams, is the third "born" of The Endless, after Destiny and Death respectively.
Dream's personal and professional relationships with mortal and immortal alike have always been distant and strained (due in a large part, undoubtedly, to his self-obsessed and inflexible nature), but he has eventually come to consider Gadling a friend, meeting him once every century at a particular English tavern.
Dream, consumed by his characteristic pride and jealousy, could not sustain her rejection, condemning her to Hell after his pleading and threatening failed to sway her decision.

Encyclopedia: The Sandman (DC Comics Modern Age)
This leads to a confrontation with Lucifer, and Dream becoming the master of Hell for a time.
These tales include that of Hob Gadling, a man who refuses to die and becomes a friend of Dream's; the secret story of Joshua A. Norton, Emperor of the United States; and Shakespeare 's pact with Dream to inspire his great plays.
Two prose books relating to the Sandman series have also been published.

 Neil Gaiman's Sandman
Dream and Death, visiting mortals in the 14th Century, visit a tavern where, among other patrons, Geoffrey Chaucer is discussing poetry with a friend.
Afterwards, Dream takes Shakespeare aside, having overheard him tell Marlowe "I would give anything to have your gifts." Two hundred years later, Hob asks Dream if Shakespeare sold him his soul.
The Sandman, Dream of the Endless, girds himself for battle with Lucifer, the great fallen angel who rules Hell.

Neil Gaiman and Yoshitaka Amano, The Sandman: The Dream Hunters
The monk, upon awakening from the dream which should have killed him, is faced with living, or with saving the fox, whom he has slowly come to love.
There is mention of tengu (birdlike demons); oni (demons) help the onmyoji with his evil-doing; the fox must catch a baku (tapir-like eater of dreams) in her quest to save her love; and Morpheus' gryphon gatekeeper has been replaced by an itsumade (giant bird with a lion's head and snake's tail).
Such a relationship would be complicated enough, but the fox discovers the monk has an enemy, a distant onmyoji -- diviner -- who wishes him dead, and intends to accomplish this through the monk's dreams.

RobotFist - Dream On: A Sandman Retrospective
Dream spends much of the first book imprisoned by Shit Magicians, and when he finally breaks free, his various objects of power scattered to the four winds, he discovers that he isn't quite what he was.
Sandman leaps off the shelves by looking like nothing else you've ever seen.
You might think that with ten books in the series, plus the illustrated novel Dream Hunters, the new hardcover anthology comic Endless Nights, the spin-off comics, the mini-series and the manga filling the shelves like puppies in a window, Sandman might take some getting into.

CNN - Review: 'The Sandman: The Dream Hunters' - December 23, 1999
"The Sandman: The Dream Hunters" is that tale re-told.
There is a fairy tale quality to the prose, and a sense of fantasy imbues the illustrations.
Indeed, he has managed to make his most famous character fit seamlessly into the tale, thanks in part to the evocative illustrations of Yoshitaka Amano.

English Books The Sandman The Dream Hunters (Sandman)
Dream Hunters is definitely another step in the evolution of Amano's work as found in Tales of the Genji.
With The Dream Hunters, fans can rejoice as Gaiman returns to his signature work with a haunting fable of love, devotion and betrayal set in Ancient Japan.

Powell's Books - The Sandman: Volume 3: Dream Country (Sandman #3) by Neil Gaiman
Dreams of writers, fairies, felines, and unemployed immortals take center stage in this collection of Sandman stories.
Inside are the dreams of writers, fairies, felines, and unemployed immortals, and the World Fantasy Award-winning tale "A Midsummer-Night's Dream," which spotlights an unusual performance of William Shakespeare's play.
The acclaimed story "A Midsummer Night's Dream," in which William Shakespeare puts on a play for the Faerie folk and for the Sandman, won the 1991 World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story, the first such honor bestowed upon a comic book.

The Comics Get Serious--Review of Sandman: The Dream Hunters
Although this book is an illustrated book rather than a true graphic novel, it could easily be mistaken for one in a catalog of Sandman titles, and so I'm reviewing it.
On his way to a village that might contain a healer, he encounters an old man whom he eventually recognizes as Binzuru Harada, a wandering spirit or holy man who is charged with doing good.
Some time later, the fox overhears three fiendish beings discussing their master's plot to kill the monk through three dreams.

Amazon.co.uk: Books: The Sandman: Dream Country (The Sandman)
This book is particularly interesting, because it lacks a certain sense of continuity in the Sandman saga (I highly advise you to read the other books), and yet it has beautiful, self-contained, stories.
Around Sandman (Or Dream or Morpheus), Gaiman displays an unusual mix of fantasy, mythology and good literature.
Reviewer: Starchild (mojo_the_gorilla@hotmail.com) from England This is the one that hooked me on Sandman.

 Sandman: The Dream Hunters
This is a stand-alone tale that will appeal to those who have had no contact with the Sandman series but those who are fans will find joy in spotting occasional regular characters in this new setting.
The story, based on a Japanese folktale, drags on somewhat in the labored way of folk and fairy tales, but its mainly a framework for the real star here, which is the artwork.
Well worth the price and absolutely essential for any collections of fantasy, Gaiman, literary fairy tales, and graphic novels.

Myth, Folklore and Legend - K. Tempest Bradford - Fluid Artist.com
Neil Gaiman's Sandman graphic novels contain a blend of many different myths and folklore, mainly Greek, but his breadth of knowledge will floor you.
In fact, the story really focusses on her, and the Psyche story is a small part of the action, but a large part of the theme.
Can't have an Arthur section without mentioning this book.

Amazon.com: Books: The Wake (Sandman, Book 10)
This, too, is a melancholy story, where Dream explains what would have happened had Dream not given him his special gift.
First of all, this is the final book in the 10 volume Sandman saga.
There is a certain grace, warmth and thoroughness with which Gaiman addresses death, mourning and the welcoming of a new family member that makes this tale sure to cause readers to reflect on his or her own experiences with the aforesaid.

 Slashdot Sandman: The Dream Hunters
The Sandman series in its entirety is a moving, magnificent story; a story for adults, and not a story for violent, sex-crazed children in men's bodies as most so-called "adult" stories are.
Each entry is a tale that follows the path of dream hunters linked to each other through time.
You're judging things without knowing anything about them.

 Avary's Domain - The Skinny - Sandman
When I brought up the fact that the Sandman would never raise his fists like a brute and cold-cock someone, I was asked if I wanted to make the movie or not.
Strange symbology and anthropomorphic imagery flow vividly past the Sandman as he travels through this etheric plane...reduced to nothing more than a horrific PUPPET REPRESENTATION.
I was hoping you'd work it out on your own one day.

 Sandman Annotations
Although 1896 is too early for the Corinthian to be out of dreams on his own, we know that he's always been a 'naughty' character.
I think Gaiman plucked him out of this novel for use in Sandman.
Left to right, they are: Death's ankh, Destiny's book, Dream's helmet.

Dream Country (The Sandman, Vol. 3)
This third edition of the ongoing Sandman tale is interesting in that Morpheus himself plays second fiddle in these four stories.
The backdrops are beautiful or dark by turns, as called for by the tale.
The art is not really the focus of this collection, but it's appropriate and lovely nevertheless.

 Sandman: The Dream Hunters
THE SANDMAN: THE DREAM HUNTERS is opulently told in an illustrated text format combining Gaiman's prose with stunning, full-page paintings by Amano.
A self-contained story set in ancient Japan, THE DREAM HUNTERS is an exploration of Japanese folklore, following the ill-fated romance between a humble young monk and a magical, shape-changing she-fox who pines for him in secret.
When the fox stumbles upon a band of demons discussing a plot to steal the monk's life through a dreamtrap, it will take all the fox's craftiness - and the involvement of the King of All Night's Dreaming (Morpheus) - to save her true love.

Review: Dream Country (Sandman, Book 3)
The first story, "Dream of a Thousand Cats" is an amusing tale, but it does not deserve an entire issue to tell.
Shakespeare and his troop of actors perform Midsummer Night's Dream on a grassy hill in the English Countryside for the actual fairies that are represented in the play.
It does however, introduce us to one of Sandman's great loves and mother of his only child.

Dream (Sandman) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dream is a noble, tragic hero, very much in the traditional style of heroes of Greek tragedy.
For instance, in the story "Tales in the Sand" he interacts with the ancestors of a black aboriginal tribe, and is depicted as a black man called Kai'Ckul.
One particular aspect of Dream is the central character of the series, so referring to this aspect of Dream as Morpheus differentiates him from Dream as a whole.

 The Sandman: The Dream Hunters
Rather, The Dream Hunters is a beautifully illustrated and exquisitely written story of ancient Japan involving magic, love, sacrifices and, of course, dreams.
Reading The Dream Hunters was a magical experience to be savored.
Sandman story and a freestanding work all its own, without needing reference or background in the Sandman universe.
