Encyclopedia of Arda: King of Durins Folk
Durin's Bane had been destroyed in the War of the Ring, so that Khazad-d& lay open for recovery by its ancient owners, and there is some evidence that it was Durin VII who at last achieved this.
From time to time over the millennia, one among Durin's descendants would arise so similar in bearing to his ancient ancestor that he, too, would be given the name 'Durin'.
We can safely deduce their existence because we know that Durin VI took the throne in the late second millennium of the Third Age.

 Encyclopedia of Arda: Durins Bane
Despite an ill-fated attempt to recolonise Moria by Balin in III 2989, Durin's Bane remained a dark and brooding menace in the ancient kingdom of the Dwarves, whose nature was hidden to the outside world.
Durin was slain by the creature and his son N& I became King.
In Appendix A III (Durin's Folk) of The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien hints that the Dwarves may in fact not have awoken the Balrog, but that instead it was the growing power of Sauron in nearby Dol Guldur that returned it to life.

 #277: Durin's Bane
Their prowesses are the same, though Durin's Bane has body.
Overall, Durin's Bane is a very powerful creature (one that can auto-wound any character with prowess lower than six) with a few drawbacks, mainly that it and cards like it scare people away from the under-deeps.
On top of the fact that it has the psychological advantage ("I'll play DURIN'S BANE on your company of Dwarves, chose the strikes"), it is also a very dangerous creature, probably much better than the original Balrog.

Lord of the Rings Fanatics Library - History of Moria in the 3rd Age
Later it became known that Durin's Bane was one of the Balrogs, Maia of fire corrupted early by Morgoth, who, escaping destruction in Thangorodrim during War of Wreath, had hidden himself in the depths of Moria.
Only one person is reported to have seen Durin's Bane between 1981, III, and 3018, III, and the witness was young Dáin Ironfoot, later the king of Durin's folk, who saw the Balrog through the gate of Moria where he slew the great goblin Azog during the Battle of Azanulbizar.
However, judging from the fact that among the victims were both Durin VI and his son Náin I, the loses were probably heavy.
