 | | It is revealed in Tales from Earthsea that once, the women of power (mages) spoke with and learned from the Old Powers, but in Ged's age, they are considered evil. | | | "The Bones of the Earth" (2001) (in Tales from Earthsea) | | | This line of rulership was ended by the death of Erreth-Akbe, upon which Earthsea divided into many separate realms and domains. |

 | | The original Trilogy was composed of A Wizard of Earthsea (1968), The Tombs of Atuan (1971), and The Farthest Shore (1972). | | | Written 18 years later, Tehanu: The Last Book of Earthsea, follows immediately upon the end of The Farthest Shore as Ged, bereft of his magical ability, returns to the island of Gont on which he was born and on which Tenar now lives. | | | The first published story in the Earthsea world was The Word of Unbinding, which was originally published in Fantastic (1964) and later reprinted in The Wind's Twelve Quarters (1975). |

| | CRITIQUE :: Tales from Earthsea |
 | | The first three Earthsea books, A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan and The Farthest Shore, were published in the 1960's and 70's, and were one of the finest fantasy trilogies of the twentieth century. | | | Le Guin's upcoming Earthsea novel, and as such it is probably the most important piece in the book. | | | Le Guin is more successful in Tales From Earthsea than in Tehanu, which often seemed strained in its attempt to offer a more feminist perspective on Earthsea and its engagement with the ills of modern society. |

| | The SF Site Featured Review: Tales from Earthsea |
 | | The collection spans the history of Earthsea, some of them shedding light on times where social conventions are quite different from those depicted in Le Guin's novels -- particularly gender roles in regard to the use of magic. | | | It didn't help that I'd heard from Le Guin fans Tales was not a good place to enter the Earthsea series, as newcomers to her fantasy world would probably be lost without knowledge of the previous novels as reference. | | | The tales range from "The Finder," set early on in the history of Earthsea, to "Dragonfly," a piece which serves as the vanguard of Le Guin's recent novel, The Other Wind. |

 | | I wasn't familiar with Ursula K. | | Ursula K. LeGuin, Tales from Earthsea |
 | | She concludes this collection with an essay about Earthsea's history, people, literary works, magic, and languages, which is not as bleedin' detailed as the various Middle Earth histories, and is quite a bit more charming. | | | Although often considered to be children's literature, I think that The Earthsea Cycle is a somewhat dark fantasy set in a world where really old gods and dragons lurk at the outskirts of civilization, and bad things happen to good folk. | | | She clearly indicates in her introduction that she believes her imagined reality and its people are as real as the history that historians 'create' by interpreting the flotsam and jetsam the past has provided them. |

 | | There were some nice cultural additions to Earthsea featured in the story that haven't appeared anywhere else, but since I didn't care for the characters it made no difference to me that the two of them got together in the end, and that's not a good sign for what is supposed to be a romance. | | | This is also the only story in Tales of Earthsea to feature Ged, during his years as Archmage of Earthsea. | | | Unfortunately Ged only appears in the second half of the story and because of that his presence is a little intrusive since Irioth is the main character. |

| | Review: Discovering the Earth in Earthsea: Ursula K. Le Guin's Tales from Earthsea, reviewed by Christopher Cobb |
 | | The format of the tale collection gives Le Guin the freedom to use the whole range of styles she has developed for tales of this world, but the value of the collection is not just in its variety. | | | This collection for the first time delves into the earth of Earthsea, and it solidifies the reader's sense of Earthsea's history. | | | As she did for the original Earthsea trilogy, Le Guin presents this tale as one handed down over the centuries, and she tells of these bad times in the achingly beautiful high style that characterized the original books: |

| | Bookreporter.com - TALES FROM EARTHSEA by Ursula K. Le Guin |
 | | Yet TALES FROM EARTHSEA, like all her books, does encompass an idea of good and evil, right and wrong; it shows its heart in an age when much literary fiction merely shrugs. | | | Perhaps it is this quality that has brought adult readers of fantasies and fairy tales out of the closet lately, for in a moral flatland, more than ever we need heroes and villains --- complex ones, not Disneyesque figures, and not the conventional antagonists of the mystery or technothriller, either. | | | In "The Finder," a boy comes to terms with his inborn gifts, and it becomes clear that in Earthsea, magic is a lot like technology --- what matters is how you use it. |

| | Review: “Legend of Earthsea” Brings LeGuin’s World To Life - SciFi TV |
 | | She says that it is only loosely based upon her books, and the plot makes no sense. | | | Well, yes and no. SciFi Channel has tried to stay true to the coming-of-age themes of the original, such as the Taoist ideal of the relativity of opposites, in which the interdependence of opposites results in equilibrium (good versus evil), and the importance of names. | | | The tale takes a more personal quest of Ged’s and weaves it into a larger, more epic plot that's perfect for television. |

| | Locus Online: Ursula K. LeGuin Earthsea Essay |
 | | Case in point: In the "Earthsea" books the way magic works is quite specific, a matter of language and names; it has rules, which give it a necessary limitation; and the nature of this magic is one of the fundamental metaphors on which the story is built. | | | When I saw the script, I realised that what the writer had done was kill the books, cut them up, take out an eye here, a leg there, and stick these bits into a totally different story, stitching it all together with catgut and hokum. | | | They were talking of using the first two books, A Wizard of Earthsea and The Tombs of Atuan. |

| | Le Guin, Tales From Earthsea (069legu1) |
 | | Although it's not a novel, Tales From Earthsea manages to maintain the sense of Earthsea at least as well as did Tehanu, and each of the stories demonstrates that Le Guin writes stories at the right length: what they need, not what will sell. | | | The story is not inconsistent with the earlier trilogy (a trap all too easy, and all to common, with prequels), but begins to place some different perspective on Ged's history. | | | This particular story also bears a direct link to A Wizard of Earthsea by explaining more about Ogion's past, before Re Albi. |

| | Ursula LeGuin's Magical World of Earthsea |
 | | The second principle, the relativity of opposites, is the basis of the stability of Earthsea. | | | When Arren, the soon-to-be-king of Earthsea sends for Ged to officiate the crowning ceremony, Ged flees to Tenar's home in Middle Valley, embarrassed that he is no longer a mage, naked without his power. | | | In Taoist thought this principle, that opposites are dependent upon each other (light and dark, good and evil) is symbolized by yin and yang, the circle containing black and white swirls which originate from each other and then end in each other. |
