English poetry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
English Renaissance poetry after the Elizabethan poetry can be seen as belonging to one of three strains; the Metaphysical poets, the Cavalier poets and the school of Spenser.
The most significant English poet of this period was Thomas Wyatt, who was among the first poets to write sonnets in English.
Among the foremost of these poets were T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound, both of whom spent part, and in Eliot's case a considerable part, of their writing lives in England.

English literature. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
The ideal English Renaissance man was Sir Philip Sidney—scholar, poet, critic, courtier, diplomat, and soldier—who died in battle at the age of 32.
The foremost poets of the Jacobean era, Ben Jonson and John Donne, are regarded as the originators of two diverse poetic traditions—the Cavalier and the metaphysical (see Cavalier poets and metaphysical poets).
Restoration comedy reveals both the influence of French farce (the English court spent its exile in France) and of Jacobean comedy.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: English Literature
Meanwhile, one matchless poet, John Milton, living through the greater part of the century, went his own way ("his soul was like a star and dwelt apart"), taking little notice of prevailing types or subject-matter, fusing romantic and classical elements into one superb kind of work that we can find no name for but "Miltonic".
The "Old English Chronicle", of which there are seven manuscripts, a record of events in England from the sixth century to 1154, was meanwhile being written in the monasteries, undisturbed by the many changes passing over England.
Old English literature was practically unknown to him, but he was saturated with French poetry, for the literature of France was then, outside the classics, the most influential in Europe.

Francesco Petrarch - Father of Humanism
Wyatt is the first English poet since Chaucer to make use of Italian vernacular models in his verse, drawing on the rich legacy of Italian verse that developed from the thirteenth century on alongside the nascent humanism of the Italian city states.
Only the poet, disclaiming to be tied to any such subjection, lifted up with the vigour of his own invention, doth grow in effect another nature, in making things either better than nature bringeth forth, or quite anew, forms as never were in nature… {Nature’s) world is brazen, the poets only deliver a golden.
Wyatt and his contemporary, the earl of Surrey, were the first English poets to imitate the Italians, and while Surrey does so with some technical skill and produces attractive verse, Wyatt adopts Petrarchan expression for deeper and more creative purposes.

English poets of almost every era have followed and adapted the sonnet to produce some of their best and worst work.

Thomas Humphry Ward, The English Poets
The history of English poetry is so wide, its various selections and stages have become the objects of so special a study, that a book which aims at selecting the best from the whole field and pronouncing its judgments with some degree of authority, must not be the work of one writer, but of many.
The exceptions that we have made are in the case of the Scotch poets (though with them it is a matter of language than of orthography), and of Spenser, who is so intentionally archaic that his spelling is peculaiar, and is a part of himself.
It has been, to collect as many of the best and most characteristic of their writings as should fully represent the great poets, and at the same time to omit no one who is poetically considerable.

I would hate to see the English ghazal so confined by formal restrictions that it would be a minor form, used only for poets to demonstrate their technical cleverness (rather like sestinas or villanelles).

His great love was English poetry and Shelley in particular, and it was his translations of Shelley’s work between 1892 and 1899 that brought him to the Russian public’s attention.
The verse of such writers as Goethe, Heine and Byron became familiar through the medium of translation to readers who were totally unacquainted with the original language in which the works were written.
The diverse sources — anonymous folk rhyme, Shakespeare, the celebrated Romantic poets Byron, Shelley, and the now largely forgotten Barry Cornwall (1787-1874) — bear witness to the enduring effect on the Russian imagination of English sensibility, particularly as expressed in its lyric poetry.
