Topic: Ents

Ent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ents found the Elvish language Quenya to be a lovely language, and adapted it after their fashion to everyday use.
Almost nothing is known of the early history of the Ents — they apparently lived in and protected the large forests of Middle-earth in previous ages, and they briefly appear near the end of the First Age, attacking a band of Dwarves, apparently summoned by Beren and Lúthien.
Ents are not hasty creatures, they take their time; even their language is "unhasty".

GW Online : The Lord of The Rings : Heralds of The Free : Rules For The Ents
Ents are giants that resemble nothing so much as trees, having lived for so many years in the groves they have become rather like the trees that they love.
Ents are creatures of great strength, able to tear rocks out of the ground and hurl them across the battlefield with crushing force.
Ents are powerful creatures with iron-hard limbs that can smash apart stone just as tree roots can crumble rock.

 Treebeard
It is not known exactly when the Ents came into being, but it may have been around the time of or shortly after the awakening of the Elves, which occurred around 1050 of the Years of the Trees.
While no Ents had died of natural causes, some had been killed and many others had become more like trees.
But if we stayed at home and did nothing, doom would find us anyway, sooner or later.

[ Daily Tolkien ] Origin and History of the Ents
Without Entings they still were doomed to extinction – and with them the Huorns, for apparently no other species had any more the power to awaken them.
Clearly, their relationship to stone is very strong, they were evidently made out of it and "return to mere stone images when not in the dark." (L153).
It may be assumed that Huorns rather resembled the talking beasts and thus were distinct from Ents by lacking the soul or fëa.

I think it says something like "They are tall mystical creatures with a keen resemblance to a large bush or small tree".
The Vala of nature wanted and created tree shepherds to watch over the forests.

This speaks against poliination however, as in pollination it is the wind or the insect which decides where the pollen goes.
Maybe they just spread their seeds like normal trees, but are still able to have a loving relationship without sex.
I presented the theory that Ents pollinate, but not how they do it.

These tree-like creatures, agonizingly slow and covered with mossy bark, nursed themselves on tales of past glory while their numbers dwindled in their isolation.
Indeed, there are variants of the Ent theme throughout Tolkien's novels, from the dormant Riders of Rohan — whose king was exorcised from his dotage and rallied the realm's dwindling cavalry to recover lost glory and save the West — to the hobbits themselves.
The latter, protected by slurred "Rangers," live blissfully unaware that radical changes in the world have brought evil incarnate to their very doorstep.
