Topic: Ered Gorgoroth

 Silmarilion Encyclopedia
Eventually the horrors of Sauron forced Beren to leave Dorthonion, and crossing Ered Gorgoroth and Nan Dungortheb (the only Man or Elf to do so) he came to Doriath Passing the Girdle of Melian, he saw Luthien dancing in Nel- doreth in the summer of FA 465, and he fell in love with her.
She returned his love the following spring, but after a few months they were betrayed to Thingol, who demanded a Silmaril in return for his daughter's hand.
It was so named because of the fear and horror that she bred there.

Ered Gorgoroth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They were named such by the Sindar of Doriath after the spider-creature Ungoliant made it her temporary home, and spawned many evil spiders there, which wove webs that took away all light, and all the springs were poisoned.
The Gorgoroth had no known passes, and even the Orcs of Morgoth passed it by.
In all of the First Age only Beren son of Barahir is said to have passed the mountain range, and he never spoke of this terrible journey.

The creatures that infested the Ered Gorgoroth were her offspring and descendants, as was Shelob who dwelt on the borders of Mordor.
This quote comes from The Silmarillion: Of the Flight of the Noldor, which also tells us '...some have said that she ended long ago, when in her uttermost famine she devoured herself at last'.

He refused to give them to the Great Spider to be devoured, for he desired them greatly, and Ungoliant would have slain Melkor in the ensuing battle had not the Balrogs come and saved their master, causing Ungoliant to flee to the Ered Gorgoroth in Beleriand.
Melkor had promised to reward her, "Yea, with both hands", and after their flight from Valinor, the Dark Lord indeed gave her many gems of the Ñoldor, but withheld the Silmarils in his right hand.
While there, she had many offspring, as well as various creatures infesting the Ered Gorgoroth, which came to be a place of horror.
