Frankly, though, their exposure to Finnegans Wake has not been a truly representative one: Joyce's text is generally not this accessible.
Nonetheless, the issues raised by this work, and the undeniable centrality of its author's impact upon twentieth century fiction, make Finnegans Wake a work that should not be consigned to the attic of bibliographies and graduate studies, hushed up or ignored like an embarrassingly eccentric relation.
They were like those Lilliputian characters in the Wake who scrutinize the fallen hero Gulliver/Finn, "all there scraping along to sneeze out a likelihood that will solve and salve life's robulous rebus, hopping round his middle like kippers on a griddle" (12.32-35).

His Gaelic is wonderful, but his mastery of the Germanic compound words is not without a few stutters and false notes, and some passages called for a more humorous touch.
It is a 21 hour long reading spaced upon 17 compact discs and packaged with an accompanying 128 page book, The Modern and the Wake, written by Patrick Healey.
I listed to it while following along in my “pristine” (no annotations!) 1958 Viking hardback edition and I must say that it was a pleasure hearing/seeing new insights into the text just from having an authentic Irishman voice the vernacular!

...the Wake is, simply stated (which is to say, to some extent mistated) a record of the dream-thoughts of a man whose dream name is Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker and whose waking name is, I believe, Porter.
Rose had previously presented an argument, in the Spring 1989 issue of "A Finnegans Wake Circular", that "Finn's Hotel" was the 'real' original title of FW, based mostly on a couple of ambiguous hints in Joyce's unpublished letters.
This case is not strengthened by claiming the original vignettes were for an entirely different book!
