Topic: Finrod Felagund

 LotR Fanatics Library: Finrod
The tale of the life of Finrod was also entwined with the tale of Beren and Lúthien, for Beren was the son of Barahir and had taken the Ring from the Orcs who had slain his father.
Finrod stood beside Turgon and Fingolfin in speaking against Fëanor and his seven sons after the theft of the Simlarils, the dimming of the Trees and the slaying of Finwë by Morgoth (with the help of Ungoliant).
As he watched them from the shadows, Felagund's love for them grew, and when they had gone to sleep he stepped into the center of the camp, took up a rude harp he found, and played.

Finrod Felagund - THE TOLKIEN FORUM
Finrod was for a long time the father of Gil-galad and also of Galadriel for a bit, but this was changed and Finrod was made to have loved the Vanya Amarie who did not go with him into exile.
The people of Beor grew in wisdon because of the song of Finrod, and his love for them and them for him was the seed of the consequent alliances between men and elves which was necessary for the defeat of Morgoth, and an uplifting of the race of men on the whole was lasting.
For this reason I have refrained from calling Orodreth Finrod's brother in my little summary, so one reading it can either suppose Orodreth is his brother or his nephew, however, when Tolkien noted Orodreth was a son of Angrod he had him coming to Nargothrond after escaping The Bsattle of Sudden flame.

Middle-earth History - Ring of Barahir
All of Finrod’s and Beren's companions are slain one by one by a werewolf.
Beren comes to Nargothrond, shows King Finrod Felagund the Ring of Barahir, who comes to his aid, because of his oath to Beren’s father.
There he meets Lúthien, the daughter of the Teleri King Thingol, and they fall in love one with the other.

Finrod might have grown weary of the confidences which began 'Celeborn says...' had he not liked the man so much himself.
He had, Finrod thought, a clear and sometimes uncomfortably accurate view on many subjects, and a wicked, spiky sense of humour, which delighted Finrod as much as it did his sister.
But to explain as much to Finrod would be to open himself up for more questions on the nature of love than he wanted to face.

Finrod Felagund - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Finrod loved Amarië, a Vanyarin Elf who didn't follow him to Middle-earth.
Another name given to Finrod was Nóm ("Wisdom").
It was given to him by Bëor and his followers.

Redemption of the Noldor by Cirdan
Finrod's willingness to love and be loved also played a part of his early re-embodiment, for he accepted the love and rule of the Valar without regret or bitterness.
Cirdan was bereft of Finrod's friendship in all his days in Middle Earth thereafter.
The Fall of the Noldor had been the breach of love between kinsmen, but the past sins were forgiven and, instead of revenge or bitterness, love between kin like the love between Cirdan and Finrod was sought.

 Felagund
Then Felagund knew himself to be ensnared in the Oath of Feänor after all.
But Felagund was then saved from peril by Barahir and his men.
Also there are earlier story lines, where Finarfin and Finrod are one and the same (the same happened, by the way, in the relation Fingolfin/Turgon).

The Final Fantasy Forums - TOA ROUND 2: Finrod Felagund VS Rikku
It was truly a pity she had to leave this battle sooner than expected, for Finrod would only show her a lesson, and make her surrender before him.
Even her charms would never affect the him, for he learned in the depths of the labyrinth nor to fall for women tricks.
Yes, the man was truly amazed at observing the many symbols glowing all over his body.

RingQuest - Who was the sister of Finrod Felagund?
First time he went there as a messenger of Finrod and Thingol gave him orders as to where the Noldor exiles were to dwell in Beleriand, and how none should enter his realm of Doriath without his leave.
Before his second visit Thingol found out about the kinslaying at Alqualonde and acused the brothers of bloody deads, but Angrod told him how they were mislead by Feanor's words and related the rest of it (about the Doom of Mandos and the burning of ships at Losgar).
Now I think Angrod is the one you mean, but there were two of his more noted visits to Menegroth, so I'm not sure which one are you talking about.

Finrod was an excellent choice for this task; Vairë reminded herself to tell Manwë such when next she saw him.
"Now...please..." Finrod was reduced to begging as his sensitized body trembled, hands gripping handfuls of raven silk in his fists.
When he felt Finrod press against him impatiently, Maglor knew that it was time to complete the circle.

 The Shire Fellowship
The chapter ends with a dark sentiment from Finrod Felagund after Nargothrond was full wrought and Galadriel enquired about his solitude.
Now shall anything of my realm endure that a son should inherit.' But it is said that not until that hour had such cold thoughts ruled him; for indeed she whom he had loved was Amarie of the Vanyar, and she went not with him into exile.
In short all that happens in this chapter is that the hidden realm of Gondolin was set up by Turgon and his people, Finrod Felagund wrought Nargothrond while Galadriel dwelt in Doriath, and the kin of Finarfin finally give in to Thingol and tell him all that has happened before the Noldor came to Beleriand.

 [minstrels] He chanted a song of wizardry -- J. R. R. Tolkien
Context: This is an extract from the 'Lay of Leithian', an epic poem of several thousand lines which was among the earliest of Tolkien's explorations of the mythology of Middle Earth.
Glossary: A (far too detailed) glossary of terms for the Tolkienitically-challenged followeth: Finrod - (Sindarin, from Quenya 'Findarato': 'son of Fin(we)-mighty') this Elf dude who really rocks, y'know :-) Felagund - (Dwarvish: 'Hewer of caves') - epithet applied to Finrod, because of his construction of the cavern stronghold of Nargothrond.
The details of the plot need not bother us; suffice to say that today's poem describes a duel between Finrod Felagund (the good guy) and Sauron (the bad guy).

FINROD is self-sacrificing and will interpose himself between his friends and danger.
While FINROD is for the most part capable of cleaning himself, this is no reason you shouldn’t be neighborly and give him a hand.
He desires a realm of his own, and is attempting to dig himself a stronghold in your basement.

In the T3 version of the Tale of Years (of the Second Age) Gil-galad is the son of Felagund and this is also the case with 'Of the Rings of Power'.
JRRT noted in one of his copies of this edition that Celebrimbor had grown to love Finrod and his (unnamed) wife while dwelling s refugee in Nargothrond.
When was the note made on the Second Edition of RotK that suggests Finrod did have a wife in exile?

The One Ring: The White Council :: View topic - Gildor, descendant of Finrod Felagund?
Finrod loved Amarië of the Vanyar who remained in Valinor.
His name is omitted from the published Silmarillion as it does not appear in the most recent version of the tale of Beren found in "The Grey Annals" (HOME XI).
In fact the first attempt to work Gil-galad into the Elder days has him as the son of Felagund, himself.

Bëor and Finrod Felegund Lord of the Rings Fanatics Library
Finrod dwelt for a while with the Men and during this time he understood the tongue that they used and he would also hold long conversations with Bëor.
Bëor informed Finrod about the other clans of men that were crossing the Ered Luin.
With the passing of a year, Finrod expressed his desire to return to the lands of his own people.

 Hith a Naur : Hellwrath
However, in LoB, there is recounted the tale of how Barahir saved "Inglor Felagund" (who, as we know, became Finrod Felagund) during the Dagor Bragollach.
Or, was he saved by a Man named Gildor, and then, to honor that, named his only son -- who was born perhaps some years later -- after the brave Man?
So, is it merely coincidence that Inglor [> Finrod] had a son named Gildor and then, many years later, was saved by a Man also named Gildor?

Finarfin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As such he appears in the 1st edition of The Lord of the Rings as Finrod.
Finarfin was called Finrod in earlier versions of the Middle-earth mythology, and his son Finrod Felagund Inglor Felagund.
This was changed in later editions, but not all references to Inglor were removed: see Gildor Inglorion.

Council of Elrond :: LotR News and Information
Despite the violent protest from his cousins Celegorm and Curufin he went with Beren, leaving Orodreth as the temporary ruler of Nargothrond.
Finrod was the eldest son of Finarfin and Eärwen and was called the fairest of Finwë's children, because of his gentle spirit.
At his arrival in Middle-earth, Finrod dwelt in Endor with his brother Orodreth.

Felagund dwelt among them for a while, and they learned much from him.
They returned Felagund to his fortress of Nargothrond, and he gave his ring to Barahir swearing an oath of abiding friendship and aid to Barahir and all his kin.
Leaving the rule of his folk to Baran, his elder son, Beor returned with Felagund and served the King of Nargothrond while his life lasted.

 Proto-evangelion: the "Old Hope"
As Finrod and Andreth discuss the origin and meaning of human mortality, an astonished Finrod begins to speculate that healing Arda, "as agents of the magnificence Eru," is the great errand of Men: "to enlarge the Music [through which Arda and all of Eä was first made] and surpass the Vision of the World!"
Their conversation is recorded in Athrabeth Finrod Ah Andreth, "the Debate of Finrod and Andreth" (which can be found in The History of Middle Earth X: Morgoth's Ring).
Can the singer enter into his tale or the designer into his picture?"

 Gildor Inglorion
Some argue that the name "Inglorion", which means "son of Inglor" suggests, that he was in fact the son of Finrod Felagund himself, who was at that time still called Inglor.
In The Silmarillion it is stated that Finrod had no wife, since he loved Amarië of the Vanyar, who refused to go with him to the exile.
Furthermore, if he were Finrod's son, he would have right to claim High Kingship of the Ñoldor instead of Gil-galad after Turgon's death.

 Orodreth: Information From Answers.com
Together with Turgon's daughter Idril he was one of the two Ñoldor in the third generation to come into exile.
However Celegorm and Curufin the Sons of Fëanor were also at Nargothrond, and forced Finrod to lay down his crown.
Tolkien, Orodreth was an Elf of the First Age, the son of Angrod and nephew of Finrod Felagund, and a ruler of Nargothrond.

[ELFWOOD] SF&F Art / Alexey S. Lipatov / 'Finrod Felagund'
Finrod Felagund has been my favorite character ever since I first read "The Silmarilion" and I think that you have done an amazing job in depicting him.
Finrod should be blonde, but we would not see that in a bandw pic anyway:)

[ELFWOOD] SF&F Art / Anke Katrin Eissmann / 'The death of Finrod Felagund'
I adore the soft monotone of the picture offset by the blood of Finrod..
In the pits of Sauron Beren and Felagund lay, and all their companions were now dead; but Sauron purposed to keep Felagund to the last, for he perceived that he was a Noldo of great might and wisdom, and he deemed that in him lay the secret of their errand.
But when the wolf came for Beren, Felagund put forth all his power, and burst his bonds; and he wrestled with the werewolf, and slew him with his hands and teeth; yet he himself was wounded to the death.

Chapter XVII-Of the coming of Men into the West - THE TOLKIEN FORUM
The first question is why exactly Finrod Felagund finds Men?Why not some not some of Feanor's sons or somebody else?

Finrod Felagund was the most fairest and probably the most gentle and humble of the proud Noldor princes.

Entmoot - Chapter 19: Of Beren and Lúthien
What if Luthien and Huan had arrived slightly earlier at the Fortress, would Finrod have survived, would he have been able to make a difference taking the silmaril, would he have led a force into the Nirnaeth (in the next chapter) thus turning battle's tide?
Another interesting note is that Finrod mentiones that so far Celegorm and Curufin have done all that he has asked and shown him friendship at every opportunity.
Well, this chapter has many interesting "What ifs?" to it.

Finrod, called Findaráto in Telerin (his mum was from Alqualondë) and Artafindë in Quenya, and also sometimes Inglor just for fun, was the oldest son of Finarfin son of Finwë.
All of the companions were killed by a werewolf, but Finrod managed to slay the werewolf to save the life of Beren.
When Fëanor left Aman with his posse, Finrod was there behind him.
