Topic: Galdor

 Galdor's Bio
Galdor is son of Haldor, king of the Baldorians (the "Icedwellers" in the common tongue).
Galdor's part in this story is the story of his token quest.
Valor, a winter owl and his trusty companion, goes everywhere with him although many of Galdor’s warriors whisper that Valor is a spy for the witches’ cabal.

 Galdor
Galdor dipped his quill into the small vial of ink, it sizzled with a mystical energy as the ink was soaked up.
Mielikki is his only concern, her protection the burning fire in his heart and soul.
A great weight had been lifted from his soul, he followed the goddess Mielikki and strove to help her in her fight against the dark shadow.

Passionate Rain Upon the Indifferent Sea
Galdor had knelt before him in exaggeration of an outdated formality the Shipwright had never liked – he was no King and the title Lord had never pleased him.
Quickly correcting the error he had convinced Ereinion that he was not in love, least not the kind of love that was coupled with lust, and that he simply viewed the elf that raised him with the eyes of a devoted child.
He had given his servants word that he did not wish to be disturbed, hoping to circumvent this very confrontation should Galdor arrive earlier than he supposed.

He saw their lights even before he was certain of whom it was he had come upon once he cleared a small knoll.
He knew their father was very proud of his sons, each of them possessing a particular talent that he felt extra emotion over.
His mother was watching him as were his two brothers, Alanel's face a blank slate, the familiar smirk gracing Galdor's.

He clung to Galdor and kissed whatever part of the tall man was near: his nose, his chin, his neck.
The only man he would trust with such a message was Galdor, and Galdor could not leave his post.
Quickly he informed the healers of Galdor's condition, and watched as the tall man was put to bed.

And so the Knight and Elves alike began picking up the bodies and taken them to where some of the other knights had already began to dig graves.

Are the Galdor from The Lord of The Rings and the Galdor from The Fall of Gondolin one and the same?
And in the original tale of The Fall of Gondolin (1916-17) we meet Galdor, who is Lord of the House of the Tree, and as such he leads the fugitives out of Gondolin, while Glorfindel guards the rear.

Calz'Utte had explained to Galdor the reason why no gladiator had ever succeeded in purchasing his freedom: the arena master and his ogre "pet," Grack, saw to that.

Flame-red hair falling in a braid to her waist told him that she had been in the arenas for some time without a loss--that flaming braid would have become a trophy for a victor if she had.

 Rune Magic
Galdors were always composed in poetic metre; this we know from the surviving Old English charms and the Merseburg charms.
While Óðinn boasts of various galdors which he knows in the Hávamál, many of which might not involve the runes, in Sigrdrífumál, Sigrdrífa teaches SigurðR various wisdom involving the runes.
From Hávamál verse 157 it would seem that the Old Norse speakers thought it possible to use the runes to revive a dead man, although it must be pointed that as Óðinn is a god the spell may have only worked for him!

 Galdor article
Although the Anglo-Saxon and Old Norse literary evidence suggests that galdor charms took the form of poetic verse, modern practitioners of rune-magic often use the term 'galdr' to refer to the act of chanting the names of runes (or the sounds represented by runic characters).
The concept of galdor as rune sound was popularised by Edred Thorsson, whose 1984 occult-category offering Futhark: A Handbook of Rune Magic states: "The galdr is the root form of incantation (or if you will, mantra), which is the vibratory embodiment of the rune." Other authors seem to have adopted this terminology.
Among the verse forms Snorri Sturluson lists in the section of his Prose Edda called Hattatal, he includes an example of galdralag --the Galdr metre, so it's possible that galdr charms had a particular rhythmic structure in Old Norse.

 Literary Encyclopedia: Charms, Old English
The modern corpus of “Old English charms” refers to a collection of these verbal formulas, either directly identified as galdor in the manuscript or assumed by modern editors to be examples of galdor because they fit the profile of charms as magic incantations.
Hence, scholars debate whether the Old English charms retained in these manuscripts represent a remnant of pre-Christian pagan magic, as condemned by contemporary Christian homilists, or a Christianized form of folk medicine and prayer.
The Old English word usually translated as “charm” is galdor, but its meaning varies with the manuscript context.

 GreenBooks.TheOneRing.net™ Question & Answer Month of 07/01
My question was regarding Galdor of the Tree, who was an Elf-lord in Gondolin, according to The Fall of Gondolin in Book of Lost Tales 2.
The conceit, never stated explicitly, is that stories from our world's mythology, such as Kullervo or Sigurd, resemble tales like Turin's not because Tolkien was inspired by the mythology (as is factually the case), but because those tales are half-remembered echoes of the earlier tale from Tolkien's world.
However, there was a Glorfindel in Rivendell as well as one of old, and if it was about him you intended to ask, we’ve discussed him many times in our archives.

What is Tom Bombadil: Flawed Theories
Galdor admits to knowing "little of Iarwain save the name", so it must not take great learning to make general statements about his power and perhaps its source.
More specifically, Elrond is clearly reasonably familiar with Bombadil and Gandalf seems to know quite a bit about his nature and abilities, but neither of them object.
It seems likely that whatever limited knowledge Galdor based his comments on was common among the wise and learned Elves at the Council.
