Glaurung - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Glaurung was much more cunning than Sauron and Gothmog, his major contemporaries in the hierarchy of Morgoth.
Glaurung was a very powerful and cunning dragon, and he used his abilities to achieve his desired ends without resorting to direct physical violence (at which he was equally proficient).
It was his nature to trick and deceive, and to spread lies and deceptions so cleverly that they could not be discovered until it was too late.

 Make Room for Dragons
The tales of Glaurung and Smaug show these creatures were powerful and cunning.
Glaurung led the way in turning the tide against the Eldar of Beleriand, and he destroyed Nargothrond.
Scatha's death does not end Fram's tale, however, for the Dwarves demand that he return their hoard and he refuses, so they kill him (or arrange for his death).

Where Have All the Dragons Gone?
Glaurung fared better in the Dagor Bragollach and he undoubtedly wrought his vengeance against the Elves with glee.
Glaurung was smart and wary, but when he crossed the ravine of the Teiglin, he had no idea that Turin waited for him below.
"And looking westward," we are told in the story, "she stared straight into the eyes of Glaurung, whose head lay upon the hill-top."

Dagnir Glaurunga - The Official FL for Turin Turambar - v.5
I give thee joy that thou hast found thy brother at last." And so Glaurung died, and looking upon Túrin Nienor said, "A Túrin Turambar turun ambartanen: master of doom by doom mastered." Then she ran and she cast herself over, and was lost in the wild water.
Then the Orcs drove away the captives and among them was Finduilas, and she cried out to Túrin, but he still did not stir.
Finduilas, the daughter of Orodreth, who loved Gwindor, now turned from Gwindor and loved Túrin instead.

Council-of-Elrond Middle Earth Encyclopedia - Glaurung
This is one of the earliest versions of the story of Túrin and Glaurung (there named Glorund).
The Book of Lost Tales 2, Turambar and the Foaloke.
Fulfilling th curse Morgoth put on Húrin and his offspring, he laid his spell on Túrin Turambar making him view himself in twisted and misshapen light while Orcs drove captives away from the city.

The Barrow-Downs Discussion Forum - Ruin of Doriath - Húrin in Nargothrond
Yet this can scarce be so, since the death of Glaurung was so bound up with the death of his children and revelation of their evil case; while the rumour of the assault of Glaurung upon Brethil went far and wide.

 Creatures of Middle-Earth
Glaurung`s death marked the end of the first and longest chapter in the story of the great Drakes of the North.
While he was the Father of Dragons and exceptionally powerful, Glaurung was not the greatest Drake ever to enter Arda.
Turin vowed revenge, but Glaurung`s plottings bore another evil before the two came together again.

 Silmarillion-turambar
And thereupon Glaurung opened his eyes and looked upon Turambar with such malice that it smote him as a blow; and by that stroke and the anguish of the venom he fell into a dark swoon, and lay as one dead, and his sword was beneath him.
And Niniel sat and shuddered beside the falling water, and at the voice of Glaurung her darkness crept upon her again, so that she could not stir from that place of her own will.
Then he wrenched out the sword, but a spout of black blood followed it, and the venom burned it.

 The Great Worms
The evil spirit that dwelt within Glaurung was more powerful and cunning then his off-spring and so perhaps such command of followers was unique to dragons of the First Age.
Both the power and desires of dragons is illustrated by the account of Glaurung's actions in the sack of the Elven fortress of Nagothrond:
This power was used to great affect in battle, where only those wearing Dwarven armour could hope to stand firm against their flame.

The Twilight Pool - Lord of the Rings TCG
There, a mist separated them, and Nienor saw Glaurung, and the dragon enchanted her, so that she lost her senses and stood there frozen to the ground, and she lost her memory.
If ever one wanted proof of Morgoth's cruelty and ruthlessness, one only needs to look to the Narn i-Hîn Húrin, the Tale of the Childrin of Húrin, or known more commonly as the Tale of Grief.
Later did Níniel arrive and she wept, thinking that Túrin was dead.

 LotR Fanatics Library: Brandir
Soon enough Glaurung himself issued out of Nargothrond and his fires could be seen from Brethil, so Turambar called out to all the people: "Therefore Men of Brethil, I go now to seek the belly of Glaurung, by what means I may, who will come with me?" (Unfinished Tales "Narn I Hîn Húrin").
When, under the spell of Glaurung, Niniel, who was Túrin's sister Nienor, unknown, the tale of Brandir was further complicated.
As is told in the tale of the Children of Hurin, Túrin managed to slay the dragon, but from the blood of Glaurung Túrin fainted and people thought him dead.

 Falas: The Dragon
Glaurung moves quickly now moving away from the warrior of Doriath, speaking no further but instead moving towards the woman of Falas, his eyes are bright with an inner fir, the silve rof them bright even in the darkness.
He risks a glance into the hell Glaurung has created, straining to see if either maid or man survives, then further back, to find Taurelin.
Alquanna cries out to Endelion as he leaps forward.

 Narn i Hîn Húrin
Among them was Finduilas, and she cried out to Túrin as she went; but not until her cries and the wailing of the captives was lost upon the northward road did Glaurung release Túrin, and he might not stop his ears against that voice that haunted him after.
Then Túrin sprang about, and strode against him, and the edges of Gurthang shone as with flame; but Glaurung withheld his blast, and opened wide his serpent-eyes and gazed upon Túrin.
Then coming to himself he sprang upon the dragon with a cry.

[ELFWOOD] SF&F Art / Peter Xavier Price / 'Túrin Turambar stands before Glaurung'
I also consider this to be one of Tolkien's greatest tales.
When young, Thingol tells him that the sword will forever be his weapon of choice, so I wanted to make him look like a master swordsman -- particularly as Gurthang is so associated with the character.
The image of Túrin himself reminds me of a Moon Elf character from Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II named Ysuran, but that is likely just coincidence, lol.

[ Daily Tolkien / Lord Of The Rings ] Dragons in the Writings of J.R.R.Tolkien
He also has a soft underbelly, which, like Glaurung, proves his undoing, even though he wears a coat of jewels over it, with just one defect, "a large patch in the left breast as bare as a snail out of his shell," through which Bard the Bowman sends an arrow.
As Tolkien notes in "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics," the focus in medieval literature is really only on two dragons: "Fafnir and Beowulf's bane." In his writings on Middle-earth, the focus is likewise on just two: Glaurung and Smaug, and only one other is named, Ancalagon the Black
After Glaurung's death, his brood continued to play a role in the battles of the First Age, participating in the fall of Gondolin.

I wish I had a cool title for this...: Damn, Glaurung, that's cold...
This has little to do with anything except that I'm reading the book of unfinished tales by Tolkien and I have to say that of all the last words of a villain those of Glaurung, dragon of Morgoth have got to be the most evil.
I wish I had a cool title for this...: Damn, Glaurung, that's cold...
This is a paragraph of text that could go in the sidebar.

Tolkien Literature Resources - Glossary - Dragons
In his later years, Glaurung's fate was closely tied with the fate of a man named Túrin, son of Húrin.
Glaurung was the first of all the dragons in Middle Earth and was known as the father of dragons.
Glaurung was also largely responsible for the defeat of the elves in Nargothrond, where he lived afterwards for a while.

 THE FAIRER SEX
To this end, he had sought to use Arwen's unborn child to give his master form in the present world, to infuse Morgoth’s dark spirit into the infant while it slumbered in the womb.
Like the dragons and the Balrogs, the skin changers had emerged from Angband long before the Maia Arien guided Laurelin’s fruit to the stars to give birth to the first rays of sunlight upon Middle earth.
Prior to the catastrophe, Glaurung had breached the walls of Nargothrond and it was from this ancient fortress, that he conspired to resurrect the evil lord Morgoth.

 The Fire of Glaurung
The Fire of Glaurung was lost long ago!” Almos was laughing which Malchus found to be quite rude.
Malchus walked up to Almos and presented him with the stick.
There was no sign on the island to tell someone that it was the lost island of Glaurung, but there was a feeling in the air of magic.
http://staff.fcps.net/kcarnes/WilsonTheFireOfGlaurung.htm

 Mablung
Glaurung when returning mocked Mablung, saving his life, and informing him that he had now lost also Morwen and Nienor.
By admitting Nienor was lost he caused Túrin to realize that Níniel his wife had actually been his sister Nienor, and Túrin killed himself.
Nienor was found again by Mablung, but he later lost her again when she, her mind wiped by Glaurung, fled from Mablung during an Orc attack.

Silmarilion Encyclopedia from T to Z
During these years Finduilas came to love him, but he did not return her love.
The next year Glaurung menaced Brethil and Turin slew him, but the dying dragon's malice caused Turin to slay Brandir (-who he thought was lying about Niniel's true identity) and then himself.
Turin fought valiantly in the disastrous Battle of Tumhalad, but returning to Nargothrond, whose ruin his counsels of open war had ensured, he was ensnared by Glaurung.

Since a major theme of Tolkien's work is the sterility of evil and its inability to create anything new (indeed, only God/Eru can truly create), it's better to say that Glaurung was BRED.

According to the Silmarilion Glauring was the first dragon and one of the most powerful (I think that there is only one dragon more powerful than him - that is Ancalagon; however, I suppose that Glaurung was more evil
But it appears to me likely (although there is no direct evidence) that Glaurung and maybe Ancalagon were maia, but their descendants were not.
But then Glaurung has more power and Anc is not the most powerful dragon.

There, he hypnotizes the blacksmith to show him how the forge is heated then kills him.
Glaurung then heats the forge until the air around shimmers with a heat that even he cringes from, then throws the sword in and watches it melt with a delighted glint in his eyes

Do Balrogs have wings, and can they fly? (The Truth About Balrogs, Vol. 6)
Still, it is also possible that JRRT made this change himself on a late manuscript which was used for the published version.
As Glaurung was wingless and flightless it is suggested that Balrogs being 'in his train' implies that they were the same.
"In the front of that fire came Glaurung the golden, father of dragons, in his full might; and in his train were Balrogs, and behind them came the black armies of the Orcs in multitudes such as the Noldor had never before seen or imagined."

Council of Elrond :: LotR News and Information
Túrin did have revenge though, he was the one to kill Glaurung, with his black sword, Gurthang.
She and Túrin ended up marrying, not knowing they were brother and sister, and only when Glaurung removed his glamour from Nienor's eyes did she see the truth, and immediately killed herself in shame.
Glaurung was the first dragon to come out of Angband, in year 256 of the First Age.

 LOTR - Dragons
In the Dagor Bragollach and the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, Glaurung was in the vanguard of Morgoth's forces, and having grown to his full power, he wreaked great destruction on those battlefields.
Of the origins of dragons, no tale tells; the first of them to be seen was Glaurung, Father of Dragons, who first issued from Angband in the middle of the First Age.
Mighty reptilian creatures who ranked among the most feared of the servants of the Dark Lord.

 Glaurung
Fingon rode against him with archers upon horseback, and encircled him with a ring of swift riders.
Glaurung was dismayed for he could not endure their darts, having not yet developed his full armor, so he fled back to Angband.
Instead they met Glaurung who bewitched Nienor and she ran lost into the wood.

Morgoth and Dragons acording to J.R.R. Tolkien
For this son of Húrin came on the Fire-drake by stealth and drove the sword of Gurthangdeep into the beast's under-belly, but, by the poison of the black blood and the venom of the Dragon's last words, Túrin Turambar was also killed.
Morgoth, however, was displeased with Glaurung for his impulsiveness, for he had planned that the Dragon should grow to full power before revealing him to an unsuspecting World.
Years after Glaurung had sacked and laid waste the kingdom of Nargothrond, the "Narn i Hîn Húrin" tells how he was slain by the mortal Túrin Turnambar.

 Non-Humanoid Intelligences
His major role is described in the Silmarillion especially in the story “Of Túrin Turambar,&; where he casts a spell upon Turin and Nienor (his sister).
While the Dwarves planned their counter-attack, Lord Fram of the Eotheod slew Scatha and claimed the treasure for his own.
However, remembering the death of Glaurung at the hands of the Dwarves of Belegost, he feared that they would try and claim his range, so in T.A. 2000 he attacked the Dwarven mine at Silverplunge where he slew the inhabitants and secured a great hoard of treasure.

The Barrow-Downs Discussion Forum - of dragons and wings
I believe that this has been disscussed before, but I didn't find anything when I did a search.
The first dragons (of whom Glaurung was the greatest and first) did not have wings, presumably because Morgoth hadn't gotten the hang of making them with wings, or something like that.
if Glaurung was the first, and the rest were his spawn, what did he mate with to produce these?
