Graphic novel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term "graphic novel" was popularized by Will Eisner after it appeared on the cover of the trade paperback edition (though not on the hardcover edition) of A Contract with God, and Other Tenement Stories in 1978.
Collections of comic books that do not form a continuous story, anthologies or collections of loosely related pieces, and even non-fiction are stocked by libraries and bookstores as "graphic novels" (similar to the manner in which dramatic stories are included in "comic" books).
The 1940s saw the launching of Classics Illustrated, a series within which notable novels were adapted into comics form, each published as a stand-alone book.

 Graphic
A Contract with God was not the first graphic novel, and Eisner was not the first person to use the term.
And when a novelist helps create a publication featuring graphic stories about comic book characters he invented in a lengthy prose work, we have a fancy comic book rather than a graphic novel.
Many of them are story cycles; the word “novel” in the term graphic novel seems to signify merely an extended work.

TIME.com -- Andrew Arnold: The Graphic Novel Silver Anniversary
Will Eisner's "A Contract with God," published in 1978, gets the credit for being the first graphic novel, though it was not actually the first long-form graphic story nor the first use of the phrase.
Then you are left saying, 'well it's got a seriousness of purpose' that the phrase 'graphic novel' alone won't offer." On the positive side, the public awareness of these books has vastly increased, creating a kind of renaissance era of intense creativity and quality.
It was, however, the first marriage of the term, which appeared on the cover, and the intent of "serious" comix in book form.

The 655 field in MARC is used for inserting genre/form headings into an item's bibliographic record, used to further clarify the use of topical subject headings and genre headings to describe a work.
Classing graphic novels in this manner can cause problems when a child comes across a title that incorporates mature themes, like Hellblazer.

But creating an encore to an instant classic is a tricky business, and Welles never equaled "Kane." After "Watchmen," the Moore's most significant graphic novel is "From Hell," an epic autopsy of the Jack the Ripper slayings, serialized through the 1990s and now finally being published in book form by Eddie Campbell Comics.
One of the rare comic book masters who's solely a writer, Moore first made his mark in the 1980s with serials in British comic book anthologies.
Other comics depicted alienated supermen and antiheroic vigilantes before "Watchmen," but never before had they seemed so much like people of flesh and blood, instead of ink and pulp.

Comic books are a genre because despite the topic of the comic book, they are almost always about the pictures rather than the story; graphic novels can stand alone as stories -- the graphics simply work to add to the story.
