Hard Times by Charles Dickens: A searchable online version at The Literature Network
From the time of the first fairy tales men had always believed ideally in equality; they had always thought that something ought to be done, if anything could be done, to redress the balance between Cinderella and the ugly sisters.
But there are rather particular reasons why the value of the book called Hard Times should be referred back to great historic and theoretic matters with which it may appear superficially to have little or nothing to do.
But this tale of Hard Times is in some way harsher than all these.

Charles Dickens's Hard Times for These Times as an Industrial Novel
At 117,400 words, Hard Times is shorter than either A Tale of Two Cities (146,500 words) or Great Expectations (189,000 words), both serialized in Dickens's second weekly periodical, All The Year Round (1859 and 1861 respectively).
The book was dedicated to the historian and essayist Thomas Carlyle, in the belief that he would sympathise with the feelings expressed therein.
Dickens' growing dissatisfaction as a husband is scarcely hinted at in the letters of 1853- 54, and its existence can only be reconstructed in the light of later events.

 Notes on Hard Times
Dickens wrote Hard Times as a scathing report on how capitalism failed the working man. Gradgrind represents all that Dickens felt was evil- he is a utilitarian and a laissez-faire economist.
Bounderby convinces Louisa to marry him, and she does so because her brother encourages her to do so and because she can think of no better reason.

Amazon.com: Hard Times: For These Times (Signet Classics (Paperback)): Books: Charles Dickens
I had read some of Dickens's melodramas like A Tale of Two Cities and Oliver Twist and enjoyed them, but everything I heard about Hard Times said this was nothing like those.
In this book, although it speaks mostly from the oppressed working class and lower middle class, characters from all walks of society mingle.
It is certainly nothing compared to works of a similar length, such as "Tale of Two Cities" or "Great Expectations." But even Dicken's lesser works are gems, although a bit less refined.

The 'terrible mistake' was the contemporary utilitarian philosophy, expounded in Hard Times as the Philosophy of Fact by the hard-headed disciplinarian Thomas Gradgrind.
Sleary's circus represents Dickens's most considered defence of the necessity of entertainment, and infuses the novel with the good humour which has ensured its appeal to generations of readers.
But the novel, Dickens's shortest, is more than a polemical tract for the times; the tragic story of Louisa Gradgrind and her father is one of Dickens's triumphs.

By lagging behind other papers in reporting on Miller, critics have been left to speculate that the mighty Times is running scared, that it's been reluctant to look into just what Miller knew and what political figures she may have been in bed with.
