Harry Paget Flashman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flashman and the Angel of the Lord (1996) — John Brown and the Harper's Ferry Raid, 1858 and 1859.
Brigadier-General Sir Harry Paget Flashman V.C. is a fictional character originally created by the author Thomas Hughes in his semi-autobiographical work Tom Brown's Schooldays, first published in 1857.
Though Flashman constantly betrays acquaintances, runs from danger, or hides cowering in fear, he arrives at the end of each volume with medals, the praise of the mighty, and the love of one or more beautiful and enthusiastic women.

 Flashman
Flashman, now an old man telling the story of his life, has resolved to hide nothing of his own true conduct and feelings, however damning.
Flashman is the first in a series of nine books (so far), and chronicles Sir Harry's life since leaving Rugby School through his thoroughly unwilling participation in the First Afghanistan War in 1842.
The tales are told in Flashman's own words which, while not unbiased in interpretation, are completely candid.

Flashman fights savages, beds beautiful women, acts like the all around cad that he is and suffers the usual misfortunes.
But then Sir Harry Paget Flashman isn't just another eminent Victorian; he is also the stuff of legend and truly an inspiration to us all.

Flashman is asked to be an emissary to the Tai Pings, falls in with bandits, takes part in the Seige of Nanking, is captured by the Manchus, and is finally kept as a plaything by the Princess Yehonala at the Summer Palace.
With mixed emotions on the matter, Flashman is hauled along on the expedition to save Elspeth-- led by James Brooke, the noted "White Rajah of Sarawak." In the melee, Flashman winds up on Madagascar, where the bloody reign of Queen Ranavalona has made the island into a living hell.
From Flashman and the Mountain of Light, page 198: "No one in the Foreign Legion speaks decent French, the boots don't fit, and the bayonet scabbard is a clanking piece of scrap."

 Spectator, The: Flashman, my hero
Though far from heroic himself, and not an admirer of heroism, he nevertheless knows a hero when he sees one, and some of the best scenes in the books take in Flashman's meditations on historical characters whom he knows to be his moral superiors.
At the same time, The Flashman Papers, to give the books their collective title, are based on a joke.
Critics are rather too fond of proclaiming that such-and-such a writer has the ability to create a world.

The last mention of Flashman in this book - in which his character as a bully, back-stabber, and coward is firmly established - is when he is expelled after being encountered, drunk, by one of the schoolmasters, and it is with this event that the first of the Flashman novels begins:
And always at the center of the action - usually gulping in terror and trying his damnedest to escape - is Flashy, V.C., whose reputation as the indomitable Hero of Kabul and the Hector of Afghanistan is dispelled before the readers' very eyes as the man himself tells the truth behind his glorious 'official' history.

He is too cowardly -- and too full of lust -- to offend her by pointing out that the price of her slippers would be enough to fund relief for a hundred local families -- that her spirited defense of Indian independence is motored by the desire to preserve her own privilege.
The white invaders, meanwhile, are largely pompous buffoons, self-serving careerists and starry-eyed madmen no better in fact, for all their self-righteousness, than Flashman himself.
Along the way, he also managed, through lies, luck, betrayal, and a deceptively manly aspect, not only to cover himself in glory, but also to roger every half-willing piece of tail he met, whether monarch or bint, with the (possible) exception of good queen Vic herself.

The Crimean War, together with serfdom, is quite an embarrassment for the Russians and George MacDonald Fraser spares none of his literary talents describing the 'beauty' and 'excitement' of Russian life in the middle of 19 century.
