Fantasy film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fantasy offerings were released only sporadically until the 1980s, however, when high-tech filmmaking techniques and increased audience interest caused the genre to flourish.
Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy as the prototypical modern example of High Fantasy in literature, and the recent Peter Jackson film adaptation of the books is a good example of the High Fantasy subgenre on the silver screen.
As a cinematic genre, fantasy isn't as highly regarded as it's close neighbour science-fiction, the reason for this is until very recently, fantasy films were made of low or inferior production values, over-the-top acting and decidedly poor special effects.

Elf - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fantasy elves frequently divide up into subraces, such as the High Elves, Wood Elves and Dark Elves found in the Warhammer Fantasy game setting.
Elves have become standardized staple characters of modern fantasy to such an extent that breaking the norms for how an elf is supposed to be and behave has become an end in itself for certain works of fantasy.
Fantasy elves are different from Norse elves, but are more akin to that older mythology than to folktale elves – they are unlikely to sneak in at night and help a cobbler mend his shoes.

Fantasy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In other cases, most frequently in works of modern fantasy in the high fantasy subgenre, the story might take place in a fantasy world that is wholly different from our own, complete with distinct laws of physics that allow magic to be incorporated naturalistically into the setting.
Fantasy writing saw renewed popularity, often influenced by these seminal works and, like them, borrowing from myth, epic, and medieval romance.
Beginning perhaps with the Epic of Gilgamesh and the earliest written documents known to humankind, elements that would eventually come to define fantasy and its various subgenres have been a part of some of the grandest and most celebrated works in all of history.

 RPGnet: Review of Fantasy Hero
Of particular note here is the separation of epic and high fantasy, the loss of the disdainful "hack and slash fantasy" category, and a more extensive take on subgenres that have modern elements or characters.
This genre-book style Fantasy Hero book saw a significant increase in the breadth and versatility of the book and the system when applied to fantasy genres.
The old fantasy hero rules provided a fairly straightforward form useful in defining how the campaign operates, its tacit assumptions, etc. This was useful in both conception of a campaign and being a ready reference for the players; I think it was a major mistake to exclude some version of them in this edition.

Because of that, I found the book to be entertaining, although I can understand why those who are familiar with Robert Jordan, Anne MacCaffery, Ursula K. LeGuin, etc. would find it to be too close to those sources to be enjoyable.

 Beyond Renault - Judith Tarr
Judith Tarr began her career as a writer of fantasy and historical fantasy, but in recent years has spread out into mainstream historical and "women's fiction," though many of her mainstream novels still have a touch of the fantastic about them.
Her historical accuracy is high (although I am better able to judge the Greco-Macedonian aspects than the Egyptian), with only a few small errors: Alexander drinks his wine mixed instead of akratos (unmixed) as was the Macedonian fashion.
And while her magic ostensibly works, its appearance in the story is historically appropriate and should not offend those readers who have a categorical dislike of fantasy novels.

A Handful of Coppers collects various heroic tales from de Lint's early years of writing, primarily from the late 1970s and '80s, when his focus was still largely on high fantasy, sword-and-sorcery stuff that quickly fell by the wayside as he developed a more contemporary style.
