Book Review Non-Fiction, History of the US, Howard Zinn - Movie Discussion Forum & Message Board
Howard Zinns’ A Peoples History of the United States is an enjoyable and refreshing new approach to teaching history.
While the author is intent on re-telling history from a different perspective, he automatically loses part of his intended audience by assuming that all readers have knowledge of American history.
The majority of people today associate history with the dry dull textbooks of their high school history classes, and the memorization of people, places and dates.

ISBN 0060528370, A People's History of the United States : 1492-Present (Perennial Classics) by Howard Zinn
Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of -- and in the words of -- America's women, factory workers, African Americans, Native Americans, working poor, and immigrant laborers.
See for yourself the endless line of history books out there; but only a few authors try their hardest to tell the story from the point of view that gets overlooked every single time, the people.
Although he undoubtedly approaches the history from the left, Zinn's telling of history should also be mandatory for high school students in that it relates the history of this nation as it was experienced by a majority of its people, not through the eyes of politicians, industrialists, and other so-called "important" historical figures.

FrontPage magazine.com :: Take That, Howard Zinn! by Dan Flynn
A Patriot’s History of the United States is superficially a reaction to the Zinnification of U.S. history but substantively an attempt to return to the tradition of Daniel Boorstin, Samuel Eliot Morison, and other, less adversarial chroniclers of the American past.
Patriot’s History of the United States is too much “patriot” and not enough “history.” This is especially true when the book turns from history to current events, where the duo exhibit a more polemical tone.

A People’s History of the United States opts to mold the facts to fit the theory, leaving the reader to wonder what “people” he is referring to in the book’s title.
The Open Door Policy of equal access would be extended from Asia to Europe, meaning that the United States intended to push England aside and move in.” Yet, this didn’t happen.
The single-bullet theory of history offered by Marx—“The history of all hitherto existing societies is the history of class struggle”—is relied upon by Zinn to explain all of American history.

A People's History of the United States
When we read the history books given to children in the United States, it all starts with heroic adventure -- there is no bloodshed -- and Columbus Day is a celebration.
No, it is presented as if all readers of history had a common interest which historians serve to the best of their ability.
If history is to be creative, to anticipate a possible future without denying the past, it should, I believe, emphasize new possibilities by disclosing those hidden episodes of the past when, even if in brief flashes, people showed their ability to resist, to join together, occasionally to win.
