Horror fiction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A variation on the Gothic formula that remains one of the most enduring and imitated horror works is Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's novel Frankenstein (1818, revised version 1831).
Nevertheless, contemporary writers such as Clive Barker in The Books of Blood and Stephen King in his more considered work, such as Misery, are capable of bringing off the horror effect without excessive violence which characterises much of the current mainstream of this genre.
Fictional characters have found themselves in horrifying situations from the earliest recorded tales.

Children of a Darker God: A Taxonomy of Deep Horror Fiction and Film and Their Mass Popularity
For present purposes, the phrase "deep horror" will be used to identify this popular fascination and to distinguish it from the merely shocking or terrifying and from the traditional intellectual roots of horror and further to stipulate its significantly dreadful character and appeals.
The rape-murder of his wife by a masked husband in the film Jagged Edge (1985) is a distillation of deep horror's anonymous, nonredemptive sundering of all things human: spirit, soul, inner being, love, intimacy, and body.
A social parallel to this phenomenon is the Christianization of the pagan All Hallow's Eve/Halloween from one of the deadliest nights of the year (James 227-28) to the domesticated and disinhibited All Saints' Day and "Beggars' Night." These transformations illustrate why what might terrify a particular era's audience might reduce another's to giggles.

 Horror Films
Horror films developed out of a number of sources: folktales with devil characters, witchcraft, fables, myths, ghost stories, Grand Guignol melodramas, and Gothic or Victorian novels from Europe by way of Mary Shelley or Irish writer Bram Stoker.
The first horror movie, only about three minutes long, was made by imaginative French filmmaker Georges Melies, titled Le Manoir Du Diable (1896) (aka The Devil's Castle) - containing some elements of later vampire films.
The studios took morbid tales of European vampires and undead aristocrats, mad scientists, and invisible men and created some of the most archetypal creatures and monsters ever known for the screen.

 Horror (2002)
This is one of the best horror movies to come out of the new millenium, Dante Tomaselli is a great Director, and I think we can expect much more from him in the future (or at least I hope so).
The DVD is fairly loaded, and it has a pretty good commentary with the Director, Dante Tomaselli.
This movie generates a great, suspensful, anything goes, atmosphere.

The characters are not necessarily good and bad, and the end of the story isn't known ahead of time.

They're coming to get you, Barbara! Horror movie reviews -- good, bad, classic, and current
So this past weekend I've been watching a bunch of the History Channel specials on ancient Rome, which are supposed to make me want to watch HBO's Rome, which is doomed to failure since I don't get HBO.
And there's plenty to gawk at (although they did have to blur out the obscene mosaics for TV broadcast), which convinced me that filmmakers ought to look to Rome for horror movie inspiration.
I mean, they had a bit about a senator who kept a huge pool of eels at his villa, into which he used to throw disobedient slaves, leaving them to be slowly and painfully gnawed to death.

 Memento Vivere :: Horror
Now, once again it's starting to be okay for publishers to print books with horror printed along the spine of the paperback.
Most really good horror novels are not translateable to film.
Horror is still very much under-appreciated as a book genre, in my opinion, but the popularity of it in the visual media is making me a bit worried that just as horror is taking off again it might be, well, done to death in the public's eye before it really has a chance to shine.

By the fall of 2001, they had come up with the concept.
After some discussion, they settled on a character named "the Advisor", who would give gratuitous advice to his audience, based on current events, the movie being shown, etc. Hersh was reluctant to play a horror host in the same way as others had done so, and did not use an elaborate set or make-up.
The show opened with him in a coffin which was standing on-end.
