Ivanhoe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ivanhoe is a novel by Sir Walter Scott.
He is nursed by Rebecca, daughter of Isaac the Jew, but there can never be a romance between them, partly because of her religion and partly because Ivanhoe is already betrothed to the Saxon Rowena, his childhood love.
The legendary Robin Hood, under the title of Locksley, is also a character in the story, and the character Scott gave him in Ivanhoe shaped the modern idea of Robin Hood, the cheery noble outlaw.

 SparkNotes: Ivanhoe: Characters
Rebecca's love for Ivanhoe is in conflict with her good sense; she knows that they can never marry (he is a Christian and she is a Jew), but she is drawn to him nonetheless.
Ivanhoe is in love with his father's ward, the beautiful Rowena.
Ivanhoe and Rowena are prevented from marrying until the end of the book because Cedric would rather see Rowena married to Athelstane--a match that could reawaken the Saxon royal line.

What is unique about this books is that Sir Ivanhoe combines alliance with Robin Hood (originally Sir Robert of Locksley) to fight against Prince John and free King Richard the Lion-Hearted from Tirol.

The novel begins with Ivanhoe's return to England, where Prince John is plotting to depose his brother Richard, who has been taken captive in Austria on his way home from the Crusades.
For his other historical novels he had been able to rely on his knowledge of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and his expert rendering of the Scots vernacular had made his novels convincing.
Rebecca, stifling her love for Ivanhoe, accompanies her father to Spain, where they hope to find a more tolerant society.

Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott : Arthur's Classic Novels
The poem of John the Reeve, or Steward, mentioned by Bishop Percy, in the Reliques of English Poetry, is said to have turned on such an incident; and we have besides, the King and the Tanner of Tamworth, the King and the Miller of Mansfield, and others on the same topic.
But, not to mention that the prejudices of the age rendered such an union almost impossible, the author may, in passing, observe, that he thinks a character of a highly virtuous and lofty stamp, is degraded rather than exalted by an attempt to reward virtue with temporal prosperity.
But the peculiar tale of this nature to which the author of Ivanhoe has to acknowledge an obligation, is more ancient by two centuries than any of these last mentioned.
