James Macpherson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Much of Macpherson's matter is clearly his own, and he confounds the stories belonging to different cycles.
He also showed him manuscripts of Gaelic poetry, supposed to have been picked up in the Highlands, and, encouraged by Home and others, he produced a number of pieces translated from the Gaelic, which he was induced to publish at Edinburgh in 1760 as Fragments of Ancient Poetry collected in the Highlands of Scotland.
But apart from the doubtful morality of his transactions he must still be regarded as one of the great Scottish writers.

 Significant Scots - James MacPherson
The argument deduced from Macpherson’s talents, as exhibited in his original works, to show that he could not be the author of the poems in question, is plausible; but the premises on which it is founded, are by no means of so incontrovertible a nature as to give us implicit confidence in the conclusion.
During all this time Macpherson himself, the cause of all this bitterness of spirit and uncharitableness, and the only person who could have allayed it, kept sullenly aloof, and refused to produce that evidence which alone could restore the peace of the literary world, and which he yet declared he possessed.
Young Macpherson had already begun to exercise his poetical talents; and, while at the university, gave some specimens of his powers to that department of literature, but with very indifferent success.

As a student, Macpherson was a prolific poet and also developed an intense interest in the literature and culture of Ancient Scotland.

James Macpherson published the poems in Ossian in three installations: Fragments, in 1760; Fingal in 1762; and Temira in 1763.
The works Macpherson used as the historical basis for his Ossian saga had already gone through countless adaptations of their own, which is precisely why they were still in existence when he found them.
It is likely that, to use Gaskill's words, Macpherson "fancied himself as a Gaelic poet, indeed that he saw himself as donning Ossian's mantle, the last of the bards" (Gaskill 1991: 13).

Innumerable editions in most European languages bear testimony to the magic of their elemental landscapes and the proud, melancholy men who haunted them.
There were, however, orally preserved heroic ballads in which larger-than-life characters (including Fionn and Oisean) repelled invaders and had adventures in stylistically distanced, linguistically archaic verse.

Ossian by James Macpherson - Introduction
When it was first published Macpherson said that it was a translation of an ancient manuscript in Scottish Gaelic which had come into his possession, and which was a copy of an original work written by Ossian.
Over the next thirty years it was translated into many languages, and gave a tremendous impetus to both the nascent romantic movement, and the study of folklore and Celtic languages.
Writers as diverse as William Blake, Henry Thoreau, George Byron, Walter Scott, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Matthew Arnold praised or imitated it.
