Waiting for a King Like You — Merp.com Website
Arnor could have fallen into an intellectual somnolence, in which each generation gradually shed itself of the burden of remembering the past.
He tells us that "after Earendur owing to dissensions among his sons their kingdom was divided into three...." We are provided no cause for these dissensions.
Why did the line of the High Kings of Arnor and Gondor come to an early end with the death of Earendur?

 Aragorn
Then a great beauty was revealed in him, so that all who after came there looked on him in wonder; for they saw that the grace of his youth, and the valour of his manhood, and the wisdom and majesty of his age were blended together.
As Frodo Baggins struggled to reach Mount Doom, Aragorn fought the servants of the Enemy and revealed himself to Sauron as Isildur's Heir.
She begged him not to take the Paths of the Dead, and then asked to be allowed to accompany him, but he told her that her duty was to remain with her people.

 [No title]
But he proved a good and wise king; though the speech of Gondor was used in his house, and not all men thought that good.
When Sauron saw the power of the Numenoreans, he smoothened his tongue and humbled before the king, and was taken as prisoner back to Numenor in SA 3262.

Someplace Somewhere - Nerdlings! Head my plea... (LoTR)
Gondor and Arnor are the kindgoms founded by Elendil of Numenor in Middle Earth.
so he's the rightful king of man and is not on the throne.
Aragorn is the rightful heir to the thrones of Gondor and Arnor, to be sure, but it's more complicated than that.

[ Daily Tolkien ] Relations between the Kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor
Arvedui as King of Gondor and heir to the throne of Arthedain, would have restored the High-Kingship and this may have prevented later evils (see the words of Malbeth the Seer, LOTR App.
From these lines it seems that the High-kingship required an individual of strength to wield it and that the rulers of Gondor did not desire the involvement of the ruler of Arnor in their affairs.
The Realms-In-Exile were founded by the Faithful Numenoreans who survived the fall of Numenor in 3320 Second Age (SA).

Razing Arnor: How real were the Dunadan conspiracies?
We know virtually nothing of his reign or events in Arnor.
The events surrounding the curious division of Arnor don't really tell us much, either.
Hence, the fact that Amlaith began his reign as merely a King of Arnor may have given his brothers and their supporters a pretext for seceding from Arnor.

 Tarondor of Arnor
He should not be confused with his more famous namesake, Tarondor of Gondor.
He ascended the throne of Arnor in 515 T.A. on the death of his father Tarcil.

However, even if they had been allowed to return to life it is not likely that they regained the title.
Because Fëanor had taken the ships and left the Ñoldor led by his half-brother on the west side of the sea, the royal houses of the Ñoldor were feuding, but Fingon son of Fingolfin, whom Fëanor had left behind, saved Maedhros, son of Fëanor, from Morgoth's evil and the feud was settled.
Sauron by this time had replaced his master Morgoth as the Dark Lord.

 Bambooweb: Fornost
In T.A. 1974, Arthedain was overrun by the forces of Angmar, they captured Fornost, and King Arvedui fled into the northern wastes and was lost in the Ice Bay of Forochel.
It is not known when Fornost was founded, or when the kings of Arnor moved there from Annúminas; but most probable is that when Eärendur died in T.A. 861, and Arnor was divided into three kingdoms, Eärendur's eldest son Amlaith moved to Fornost to rule his kingdom of Arthedain.
Tolkien, Fornost Erain (Sindarin 'Northern-fortress of the Kings' from for(n) (north) + ost (fortress); "Norbury of the Kings" in Westron) was a city of Eriador in the north of Middle-earth.

THE TOLKIEN FORUM - Arnor and Gondor
This in itself is enough of a difference to give Gondor more of a chance to survive than Arnor.
I thought it might be interesting to get some ideas on the subject of the Fall of Arnor.
The fact that there was enough dissension amoung the sons to cause the division of the realm of Arnor into three petty kingdoms would seriously lessen the chances of the survival of the once great realm of the Dúnedain in the north.

Arnor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After the death of its tenth king, Eärendur, in T.A. 861, Arnor was shaken by civil war between the three sons of Eärendur.
His three eldest sons were killed with him, but the fourth and youngest, Valandil, survived and became king of Arnor (T.A 2 or 10?).
The history of the two kingdoms is intertwined; both kingdoms are known as the Realms of the Dúnedain in Exile.

 Bambooweb: Arvedui
Arvedui was the son of King Araphant of Arthedain.
The prophecy became truth, for Arvedui was indeed the last King of Arnor, and likewise the line of the Kings of Gondor also ended with Earnil's son Eärnur.
Arvedui died in 1975, and his son Aranarth became the first of the Chieftains of the Dúnedain.

 Third Age: Kings Of Arnor
Arnor was originally the northern realm of Elendil; his sons ruled Gondor in the south.
Upon Earendur's death his sons Amlaith, Thorondur, and Aldarion divided Arnor up in to three smaller kingdoms: Arthedain, Cardolan, and Rhudaur.
However, after Elendil and his younger son Anarion fell in the Final Alliance, Elendil's heir Isildur decided to shoulder only his father's lands, leaving Gondor in the care of Anarion's son Meneldil.

Elendil named himself High King of Arnor and left the rule of Gondor to his sons, Isildur and Anarion.
Honoring the wishes of Elendil, the line of kings in Arnor was preserved.
Their solution was for the steward of the king to take an oath "to hold rod and rule in the name of the king, until he shall return." As a rule, they did not sit upon the throne, for only the king could sit on it.

Reunited Kingdom - definition of Reunited Kingdom in Encyclopedia
With the defeat of Sauron and Mordor, the Reunited Kingdom of Aragorn was without question the dominant power of (North-west) Middle-earth during his long reign.
When Aragorn became King of Gondor at the end of the War of the Ring, he was also the descendant of the Kings of Arnor, and by right he was crowned King of both Arnor and Gondor and Reunified the Two Kingdoms, which had politically split long ago.
Aragorn was also held to be overlord of Dale (which included Esgaroth), and the Dwarf-city of Erebor, although these allies maintained their own rule and kings.
