Topic: Kinslaying

 Doom of Mandos
The Kinslaying was the Elves' equivalent of Man 's Original Sin.
Their Oath shall drive them yet betray them and ever snatch away very treasures that they have sworn to To evil end shall all things turn they begin well; and by treason of unto kin and the fear of treason this come to pass.
In the fiction of J.R.R. Tolkien the Doom of Mandos also called the Doom of the Noldor or the Curse of Mandos was the judgement of the Valar pronounced on the Elves who carried the Kinslaying at Alqualondë :

Deterred by Fëanor's conduct in the Kinslaying and by the Doom of Mandos, Finarfin returned to Tirion, where he was forgiven and given the rule of the Noldor remaining in the West.
But when he heard the further tragedy of Melkor's murder of Finwë and theft of the Silmarils, Fëanor resolved to return to Middle-earth in pursuit of Melkor, defying the Valar and swearing the terrible Oath of Fëanor (q.v.), by which he, his sons, and Beleriand were later doomed.
But at last, desiring to keep his beloved Luthien from Beren, he demanded a Silmaril as her bride-price, and thus was drawn into the Doom of the Noldor.

The Barrow-Downs Discussion Forum - Finrod and the Kinslaying
But his sons were not with him, for they would not forsake the sons of Fingolfin; and all Fingolfin's folk went forward still, fearing to face the doom of the gods, since not all of them had been guiltless of the kinslaying at Alqualondë.
It's not that we (the Elves) are guilty of eating the apple (participated in the Kinslaying) ourselves -- it's just that the epitome of humanity, the foremost being created of God, Adam himself (Feanor himself) demonstrates that humans (Elves) are capable of disobedience and evil.
I think that it could be said also that Finrod had fallen because even thought he knew about the Kinslaying, he let his pride get the better of him and still followed the Kinslayers to ME. His father repented after the Doom of Mandos was uttered, Finrod didn't.

As it is, I had a bitch of a time getting her into the action at all, what with Finarfin's kin being clean of the Doom of Mandos and all.
Author's Comments: My initial image was of Galadriel having this deep dark past as an active participant in the Kinslaying, some sort of "grim avenging valkyrie" imagery to place at direct odds with her current "sweet elven lady" schtick, but I had to revise this as I read the events more closely.

Whatever these details the Swan-ship of Lothlórien was, for Galadriel, much more than a pretty way to sail down the river - it was an affirmation of her Teleri lineage and an homage to those of her grandfather's house whose blood was shed upon the silver shores in the West.
In one version, related in Unfinished Tales, it is said that Galadriel took up arms against Fëanor in defence of her mother's people: whatever the truth of that it must be certain that she took no part herself in the Kinslaying.

A messenger from the Valar came and delivered the Prophecy of the North, pronouncing doom on the Ñoldor for the Kinslaying and warning that if they continued they would not recover the Silmarils and moreover that there would be great grief in the tragedy that would befall them.
Because Fëanor had taken the ships and left the Ñoldor led by his half-brother on the west side of the sea, the royal houses of the Ñoldor were feuding, but Fingon son of Fingolfin, whom Fëanor had left behind, saved Maedhros, son of Fëanor, from Morgoth's evil and the feud was settled.
At this, some of the Ñoldor who had no hand in the Kinslaying, including Finarfin son of Finwë by Indis, returned to Valinor, and the Valar forgave them.
