Larry Niven - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A thinly disguised Niven appears as the character "Lawrence Van Cott" in the Greg Bear novel The Forge of God.
In this story, the coldest place concerned is the dark side of Mercury, which at the time the story was written was thought to be tidally locked with the Sun (it was found to rotate in a 2:3 resonance just months before the story was published).
He has also written for the DC comics character, Green Lantern, including in his stories hard science fiction concepts such as universal entropy and the red shift effect, which are common to his novels but unusual in comic books.

Science Fiction Writer Robert J. Sawyer: Larry Niven
And that's the absolute truth: we honor Larry this weekend because we all — every single one of us who writes this stuff for a living — have read, and been influenced by, and admire the hell out of him.
Likewise his kzinti and the Moties from his 1974 masterpiece with Jerry Pournelle, The Mote in God's Eye, are as much psychological prisoners of their evolutionary ancestry as.
Thanks to his work, Larry Niven is immortal already.

 Larry Niven, Ringworld
Niven works on such a broad canvas, tossing gargantuan geographic features around so casually (several oceans observed in passing are wide enough to hold Jupiter several times over) that the scale and grandeur is utterly lost, beyond the reader's ability to grasp.
On finishing the story, I was struck with the distinct impression that Niven spent maybe 90 percent of his effort on Ringworld fleshing out all the celestial mechanics and cosmic equations, and only 10 percent of his effort actually devising a tale to show off this cool new toy.
In fact, to stress its importance, Niven spends the entire first third of the book assembling this crack exploration crew, all the while keeping their destination a coy little secret (nevermind the fact the book is titled -- SURPRISE!

 Ringworld's Children by Larry Niven
This book brings back the complete sense of wonder introduced in the first book all those years ago.
If you do not know what a Protector is, or a Puppeteer – if you do not know about Teela Brown or Speaker-to-Animals – in other words, if you have not been to Niven’s worlds before this is not the book for you.

 Larry Niven: Ringworld
Although Niven attempts to weave various subplots into the story, none of them are as interesting or as well thought out as the actual Ringworld.
The idea that puppeteers were breeding humans for luck, resulting in Teela Brown, never really becomes believable, even though the three males on the expedition all buy into the theory eventually.
This puppeteer drafts Wu, a Kzin named Speaker-to-Animals and a human woman named Teela Brown to go on the aforementioned expedition.

"Known Space" : Larry Niven Biography
In 1999 Larry revisited his old time-travelling friend Svetz in the well-received and sf comedy "Rainbow Mars" in which a gigantic "Beanstalk" is sucking the red planet dry.
In the mid seventies Larry's next -- and commercially his most successful move -- was to collaborate with Jerry POURNELLE on "The Mote In God's Eye" (1974), a giant, spectacular SPACE-OPERA epic with all the trappings-interstellar shenanigans, aliens with unhealthy proclivities they must keep hidden, galactic aristocracies, intricate solutions to hard-sf problems.
Larry finally graduated with a B.A. in mathematics (and a minor in psychology) from Washburn University, Kansas, in 1962, and completed one year of graduate work in mathematics at UCLA before dropping out to write.
