Observer 'It's just a bloody list...'
Usually they haven't been anywhere, haven't lived enough life to become interesting characters in their own right, let alone be able to script three-dimensional characters themselves.
Which I do, and also say thank you to everybody who bothered to mail, Sorry that I couldn't reply to everybody - I hope you read at least a few of the writers, if only to confirm your possible opinion that we have made the wrong choices.
Having not read Ben Rice, his book sounds intriguing and I am planning to seek that out soon.

 Where There's Smoke
In contrast, The Lovely Bones is still burning up the bestseller list (1.5 million copies and counting) and Empire Falls, a 483-page comic tale of live in a dying Maine town won the Pulitzer and sold a gazillion copies.
There's a pretty interesting though easily manipulated article out this week about how sales for A-List bestselling novelists like Michael Crichton and Tom Clancy are way down and the runaway hits of this year in publishing are contemplative, human-relationship books like Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones and Richard Russo's Empire Falls.
It helps that both of them are fantastic books that I would recommend to anyone.

Toni Morrison and the Burden of the Passing Narrative - Questia Online Library
The long list of authors from the first half of the twentieth century, which includes canonical writers like William Faulkner and forgotten stars like Edna Ferber, is hardly balanced by the short list of contemporary writers who have addressed this figure of racial ambiguity.
In considering the relative disappearance of the passing figure from contemporary literature, this essay begins with neither a clear and substantial presence nor a complete absence of passing in the work of one of our most important novelists, Toni Morrison.
In each of her seven novels and in her sole short story, Toni Morrison invokes the passing myth, sometimes in only one or two paragraphs and often with indirection.

Certainly the correlation between the list and the number of books (59 of the 100) printed by Modern Library gives pause for thought.
Some 100 students from the Radcliff Publishing Course made their own list, and it contains more contemporary novels, more women writers, and more African-American works than does the Modern Library list.
In the nine days from July 20th through 29th, the New York Times web-site book forum had 622 opinions about the Modern Library list of one hundred best novels published in English in the 20th century.

Personal list of best authors/books -- Richard Seltzer
Looking back over the list, I was curious to check my tastes in recent fiction -- books that I read 1973-1995, that were written or first published during that period (approximately) and that I particularly enjoyed.
These are books that I came upon on my own after grad school.
Greatly impressed by the The Goldbug Variations by Richard Powers, back in 1992 I made a list of my favorite novelists of the last 20 years and my favorite books of theirs.

Lehane was involved in every step of "Mystic River." That's because Eastwood insisted on it, and he's not a man to cross.
First Clint Eastwood makes a movie of Lehane's lyrical thriller "Mystic River." Then his new book, "Shutter Island," is optioned by "Perfect Storm" director Wolfgang Petersen.

: RevolutionSF - Leon and the Spitting Image : Review
Apparently, even brilliantly articulate novelists have kids for whom they want to write.
Put it this way: the book contains detailed references to medieval sewing guilds, stained glass windows, jousting and has plot points involving farting, dodgeball, and the magical properties of teacher's spit.
None of the book will fly over their heads and whenever Kurzweil introduces an idea with a historical basis, he neatly makes a point of explaining its background.

Well, the predictable answer would be yes, but the actual answer is no. I loved working on The Secret History, and I was rather sad when I finished it.

Granta's list is a marketing exercise on behalf of contemporary literature, and was the brainchild of Desmond Clarke, who ran the Book Marketing Council in the early 1980s, before literary novelists acquired their present status as minor celebrities.
This is the third list published in the last three decades.
Others chosen included Monica Ali for her debut novel Brick lane, Philip Hensher, author of last year's The Mulberry Empire; Toby Litt, whose most recent work is Deadkidsongs; Alan Warner, author of the screen-adapted Morvern Callar, and the Booker-nominated Andrew O'Hagan, whose fictionalised account of the life of Lena Zavaroni comes out later this year.

 Articles - Genre
The concept of "genre" has played a notable role among philosophers of language, figuring very prominently in the works of philosopher and literary scholar Mikhail Bakhtin.
Bakhtin's basic observations were of "speech genres", modes of speaking or writing that people learn to mimic, weave together, and manipulate (such as "formal letter" and "grocery list", or "university lecture" and "class notes").

 SALON Features: Making the cut
The list, which included such semi-notables as Jeanette Winterson, Will Self, and Ben Okri, as well as a batch of virtual unknowns -- Tibor Fischer,
Candia McWilliam -- was deemed to be so pale and scrawny that critics began muttering (again!) about the death of the British novel.
As prescient as it was gimmicky, Granta's debut list neatly skimmed the era's killer elite, from Martin Amis, Pat Barker, Julian Barnes and William Boyd to Kazuo Ishiguro, Ian McEwan and Salman Rushdie.
