Literary Theory [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
Literary theory is a description of the underlying principles, one might say the tools, by which we attempt to understand literature.
These causes converged with early literary feminist practice, characterized by Elaine Showalter as "gynocriticism," which emphasized the study and canonical inclusion of works by female authors as well as the depiction of women in male-authored canonical texts.
In one of the earliest developments of literary theory, German "higher criticism" subjected biblical texts to a radical historicizing that broke with traditional scriptural interpretation.

Key Terms in Literature, by Ismail S Talib
Like many literary terms (tragedy and epic being prominent examples), the term has its origin in ancient Greece, but Aristotle's discussion on comedy in his Poetics is believed to be missing, and one consequence of this is that the term is less rigidly defined than tragedy.
Genre: A literary form; examples of literary genres are tragedy, comedy, epic, and novel.
Tragicomedy: A literary work which combines elements of both tragedy and comedy.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Literary or Profane Legends
In the oldest literary versions, the French poems of the "Chevalier au cygne" (the earliest dates from the beginning of the thirteenth century), the tale of the Knight of the Swan is connected with Godfrey of Bouillon, and the French poems themselves are part of an epic cycle dealing with the Crusades.
Its earliest literary record occurs in the Latin romance "Dolopathos", a collection of stories, mostly of Oriental origin written by Jean de Hauteseille (Johannes de Alta Silva) at the beginning of the thirteenth century.
A new edition of Widmaun's version was given by Pfitzer in 1674, and an abbreviated edition was brought out about 1725, by one who calls himself a "man of Christian sentiments".

This will be done through a comparative analysis of the texts written at the time in both European and Indoamerican languages.
Also significant is the relation between the production/reception of literature and literary institutions (indigenous and European--academic, publishing, media, church, state, etc.).
