 VLordRuthven
To enhance his own gratification, after the seduction, Lord Ruthven requires his companion in sin be lurked from the pinacle of virtue to the very lowest abyss of infamy and disgradtion.
Lord Ruthven possesses irresistable powers of seduction as well as having licentious habits which make him dangerous to beautiful hostesses.
He has the reputation of a winning tongue and it is perhaps the reason that every good hostess seeks to have him on her guest list.

Lord Ruthven answered, that his intentions were such as he supposed all would have upon such an occasion; and upon being pressed whether he intended to marry her, merely laughed.
He left Smyrna, and on his way home, at Rome, his first inquiries were concerning the lady he had attempted to snatch from Lord Ruthven's seductive arts.
They consented: and Aubrey immediately mentioning his intentions to Lord Ruthven, was surprised to receive from him a proposal to join him.

RUTHVEN (TO DAVENAUT) Leave her, venerable sir, I beg you.
RUTHVEN And cursed you shall be into the abyss of hell, all the punishment of perjury shall weigh upon your soul if you break your oath!
RUTHVEN (TO HIMSELF) May the clouds gather, May it roar and bluster, May the dark night cover the future, And fate sneer at us teasingly, Who has seen the might of hell, Is familiar with horror, Nothing can move him!

Lord Ruthven - Art History Online Reference and Guide
Aubrey accompanies Ruthven to Rome but leaves him after Ruthven seduces the daughter of a mutual acquaintance.
The novel was an immediate success and several other authors quickly adapted the character of Lord Ruthven into other works.
Before he dies, Ruthven makes Aubrey swear an oath that he will not mention his death or anything else he knows about Ruthven for a year and a day.

 Steampunk: Lord Ruthven
The Vampyre is about Lord Ruthven and the effects of his evil on a young man named Aubrey.
While Nodier had not written that particular tale, he had written the preface to the French edition of The Vampyre, and was at work adapting Polidori’s story for the stage.

"The Bride of the Isles" by Anonymous
Lord Gowen and Robert rushed in and secured the intended bride, who fainted immediately, for in the person of her noble cousin she beheld the form shown her by Una and Ariel in the cave of Fingal, and the vampire’s charm vanished away like snow before the meridian sun.
By what miracle did he behold Ruthven, Earl of Marsden, standing before him, and Lady Margaret hanging with chaste expressions of delight on his arm; there was a scar on his forehead, and he was much paler than before the battle, but no other alteration was visible.
Lord Ronald cast in the ring — instantaneously a hissing, as if of snakes, followed, but soon all was silent as the grave.

 Family History
The Ruthvens increased their strength by an early marriage to a Cameron heiress and in 1487, Sir William of Ruthven was created a peer.
A third brother had escaped and assumed the title of Lord Ruthven as did his heir but in the 17th century the line failed.
This incident was said to be in defence of the religion of the kingdom but in reality it was to get rid of the King's favourites, the Duke of Lennox and Stewart and the Earl of Atholl.

His only recourse is to revive his sister Diana, who must filter the blood of her victims through her own body, and then give it to Ruthven to drink.
Both Ruthven and Diana had desired to win Roxanne and, by turning her into a vampire, know her love throughout eternity.
Ruthven cannot wait to leave the abbey and reclaim his lost love.

 The Resurrection of the Vampyre
And Alexandre Dumas meets Lord Ruthven in “Entretien with a Vampire.” Morlock’s introduction to each volume is also notable in that he does an excellent job of discussing the early history of the vampire as literary character, tapping a new vein, if you will, rather than warming up the same tired factoids about vampires.
However, I had never realized to what degree Polidori’s masterful 1816 story was so influential.
Also included in each volume is an original short story by Morlock where, fittingly enough, literary and historical characters intersect.

The original Ruthven bunch never reproduced enough to be a "clan," as I understand it.

As he flatly refused to interfere, they determined to send the Lord Lindesay, one of the rudest and most violent of their own faction, with instructions, first to use fair persuasions, and if these did not succeed, to enter into harder terms.
The employment of such rude tools argued a resolution on the part of those who had the Queen's person in their power, to proceed to the utmost extremities, should they find Mary obstinate.

Finally, Malwina Davenant prepares to marry Ruthven himself according to her father's wishes (she would prefer Aubry), but Aubry reveals the vampire's true nature and Ruthven is straightaway dragged down to hell by a demonic crew.
The vampire Lord Ruthven appeals to his Vampire Master to grant him another year of life on earth before being condemned to hell.
At a wedding party among the local peasantry shortly afterwards, Ruthven sets his sights on the bride, Emma, lures her away and murders her.

 Lord Ruthven Assembly
Once upon a time, in June of 1816, the poet Lord Byron challenged Percy Shelley, his wife-to-be Mary and her sister, and his personal physician, Dr. John Polidori, over which of them could write the scariest story.
Byron composed a fragment of a novel which was later picked up by John Polidori, completed, and published in 1819 as "The Vampyre".
Thus began our thankless task of tracking these wary creatures as they shamble around through our literature and culture, puncturing and infecting almost every aspect of our society as they go, far from their native earth and human origins.

But O! may they rather long live under that liberty, perpetuated, which Wallace has again given to his country: peaceful will then be their last moments on earth, and full of joy their entrance into heaven!" His eyes closed as the concluding word died upon his tongue.
The earl of Mar awaked about the twelfth hour, and sent to call Lord Ruthven, Sir William Wallace, and his nephews, to attend him.
Suffice it to say, that out of five hundred chiefs and chieftains who were present, not one of those parasites who used to fawn on you a week ago, and make the love of honest men seem doubtful, now breathes one word for Sir William Wallace.

Lord Methven was also made the "Master of the Ordinaunce and Sherif of Linlitheu by inheritance".
Convicted of treason in trying to seize King James VI, he was executed at Sterling on May 28, 1584.
Charters were given to Lord Methven and Jonet Stewart his wife, lands of Gorthy, June 5th, 1545, to him and his wife, of the Lordship of Methven, February 18, 1547-48, and to him, Lady Janet Stewart and Henry his son, of the same lordship and the lands of Gorthy, October 10, 1551.

 Chapter LVII.
John, who yet remained in France, appeared of a less violent temper; "but," added the prince, "I have been taught by one who will never counsel me more, that all the Cummins, male and female, would be ready at any time to sacrifice earth and heaven to their ambition.
I was in hopes," cried she, addressing Beck, "that my lord the king would have brought this Wallace to have supped with me here; but for once, rebellion overcame its master."
Bruce acknowledged the wisdom of this conduct, but could not restrain his animadversions on the characters of the Cummins.

Ruthven - Scottish Clans of Perthshire
Patrick, 3rd Lord Ruthven was leader of the Protestant Lords of the Congregation who deposed the Regent Mary of Lorraine in 1559, mother of Mary Queen of Scots.
The 4th Lord Ruthven was created Earl of Gowrie and had much in common with his father when dealing with the monarchy!
The surname and titles of Ruthven were extinguished by James VI and it was over 300 years before the earldom of Gowrie was restored to the Ruthvens.

 The Vampire in Fiction
The erotically charged Ruthven or seductive Clarimonde can lead one down many darkly intriguing alleyways, and many of the lesser contributions to the genre can be very lucrative as they are hidden gems amongst mountains of sleaze and overprinted bestsellers.
In fiction, the vampire made his first modern appearance in a novella, originally mistakenly published under Lord Byron's name.
Originally published as a serial in Colburn’s New Monthly Magazine in 1819, as by Byron, and as a separate volume under Byron's name shortly thereafter, it was extremely popular.

 Crede Byron
The following month’s edition carried a letter from Dr. John Polidori, who had been Lord Byron’s physician on his travels across Europe in 1816, claiming that the story was his own work, but admitting that it was based on a story Byron had begun and quickly abandoned in Geneva.
Indeed, the portrayal of Lord Ruthven was unnervingly close to the entrenched public image of Byron himself, that of an immoral and sinister anti-hero - an image which he had courted and even played upon, though he was quickly to weary of it.
The origin of the story can be traced back to the Villa Diodati on the shores of Lake Geneva, where Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Godwin (later Shelley), Mary’s step-sister Claire Clairmont and Polidori spent a scandalous summer in 1816.

Illustrated Guide to Places to Visit - Huntingtower, Perthshire
The Earl of Gowrie's daughter is said to have been visiting her lover in his bedroom in one tower and, fearing that she was about to be discovered by her mother, leapt across to the second tower and her own chamber.
The King and the Ruthven family were later involved in 1600 in the "Gowrie Conspiracy" in which the 3rd Earl of Gowrie seems to have plotted again against King James.
In 1582, a group of nobles, including Lord Ruthven, kidnapped the young King James VI and held him captive for ten months in Ruthven castle.

 Serial Killer Central
Admitted serial killer Coral Eugene Watts may have confessed to killing 12 women in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but those confessions alone will not be enough to try him for the 1974 murder of a college student, a judge ruled.
He was a prime suspect in two unsolved Mid-Michigan murders, and the investigator in the case says he should be a considered a suspect in other killings.
But CTV News has learned Karla Homolka does have some support in high places.

 X. The Vikings and Normans
William, fourth Lord Ruthven, was in 1581 created Earl of Gowrie.
In the famous Gowrie conspiracy of 1600, John, the third Earl of Gowrie, and his brother, the Master of Ruthven, were killed by supporters of James VI after they had allegedly attempted to assassinate the King.
Afterwards the name of Ruthven was banned by an act of Parliament, but in 1641 another act allowed the Ruthvens of Ballindean, Perthshire, to retain their name.
