Maedhros was panting and Fingon watched the rise and fall of the smooth, pale chest before continuing his perusal.
Fingon watched in rapt fascination as Maedhros reached his peak; his lover's eyes fluttered and he threw his head back, a rough cry of completion and love echoing through the room as his hand was coated with his cousin's seed.
Maedhros knew he could never be cleansed of the deeds his hands had wrought.

Maedhros turned his eyes from the envy he saw in Thranduil's eyes; it was not his fault the child had taken a liking to him.
Maedhros finally climbed out of the bath and dried himself off, tying the towel loosely around his waist.
His grey eyes watched the Elf-king closely, studying the golden locks that framed his face, the glittering emerald gaze and the protective hold he had on the child in his arms.

He banished this voice of reason, though, and took Maedhros by his right hand, and walked with him through the forest.

By this act of valour, Fingon won great praise, and Maedhros begged Fingolfin for forgiveness; and as a result of Fingon's heroics, the hatred between the two houses was, for the time being, assuaged.
Morgoth now took Maedhros and hung him from the face of a precipice upon Thangorodrim.
And seeing no hope Fingon strung an arrow and bending his bow, he prayed to Manwë to have pity on the Noldor.

Maedhros does kill himself either way, but throwing himself into the flames of the earth somehow doesn't seem as bad to me as falling upon his sword (as I'm assuming he made his end in the early version).
However taking all into account the throwing the Silmaril into the flames of the earth has more symbolism and allows for the earth-sea-sky thing and avoids the repetitiveness with Turin and his falling on his sword, the one that is in the published Sil is more poetic.
Catherin's portrayal of Maedhros is completely different than Jenny Dolfen's, but I still find him quite swoonable.

From their deeds, Maedhros and others perceive that Morgoth is not invulnerable.
All through the Sil, he (Tolkien) says that the elves will never on their own power defeat Morgoth, and I think that in this instance, they could have (assuming that he was exhausted from the battle, hell, Fingolfin wounded him), if they had only united.
Maybe also the reason why he restrained his host from attacking too soon was because he knew about Maedhros' and Fingon's plan.

 GreenBooks.TheOneRing.net™ Question & Answer Month of 02/01
Incidentally, in "Laws and Customs among the Eldar" (in Morgoth's Ring), we learn that Elf-children developed more slowly than their mortal counterparts and did not reach full growth until their fiftieth year or so (although perhaps the half-elven Elros and Elrond were exceptional); so they may have been even younger than their chronological age suggests.
In "The War of the Jewels", Christopher Tolkien presents the concluding entries for The Tale of Years, a chronicle of the First Age written during that period, and forming part of the basis for The Silmarillion.
From this we can determine that Elros and Elrond were born in the year 532, and Elros and Elrond taken captive by Maglor (the chronicle names Maedhros) at the time of the third Kin-slaying in 538, so they would have been about six years old at the time.
