(An interesting side note: the Roman god Mars was a god of agriculture before becoming associated with the Greek Ares; those in favor of colonizing and terraforming Mars may prefer this symbolism.) The name of the month March derives from Mars.
Like Mercury and the Moon, Mars appears to lack active plate tectonics at present; there is no evidence of recent horizontal motion of the surface such as the folded mountains so common on Earth.

He's putting together a companion volume called "A Martian Romance," which collects fiction and non-fiction, short stories and essays about Mars and about his experiences writing the trilogy.
He has supported himself as a writer for the past decade and in the process established a reputation for not only being a good writer but making sure good, believable science was part of his science fiction.
What amazes many people is that Robinson, who has no formal science background at all, undertook the commitment of making science in the Mars trilogy as accurate as possible.

Amazon.com: Books: Red Mars (Mars Trilogy)
This is a vast book: a chronicle of the exploration of Mars with some of the most engaging, vivid, and human characters in recent science fiction.
While "Red Mars" is certainly vast in scope and largely interesting from a scientific standpoint, the overall story suffers from underdeveloped characters, an overemphasis on Martian landscape, and no cohesive plot.
Posing more problems than answers, Red Mars leaves the reader uneasy about humanity's progress, with a mix of optimism about what we can do, and pessimism for what we are likely to do; it portrays characters the reader can feel for, and a planet to fall in love with.

A Princess of Mars is an Edgar Rice Burroughs science fiction novel, the first of his famous Barsoom series.
Though considered science fiction at the time of its publication, A Princess of Mars, due to its inaccuracies in astronomical information (such as, the atmosphere of Mars actually being able to sustain human life), is today regarded more as pure fantasy.
Though later published in book form, the story was first published in serial form as "Under the Moons of Mars" in All-Story in 1912.

We meet many of the important characters in the trilogy, and learn a bit more about them away from the plot machinations of Mars itself.
However, the Roger and Eileen trilogy and baseball story are all excellent stand-alones, so even those unfamiliar with the Mars Trilogy should enjoy them enough to get their money's worth out of the paperback edition.
