The metaphysical poets were a loose group of British lyric poets of the 17th century, who shared an interest in metaphysical concerns and a common way of investigating them.
Their inventive, elaborate style was characterised by learned imagery and subtle argumentation, and the "metaphysical conceit", a figure of speech that employs unusual and paradoxical images such as in Andrew Marvell’s comparison of the soul with a drop of dew.

Although Johnson’s criticisms of metaphysical poetry are based on the neo-classical assumption that art should imitate given truths, of a general nature, about humankind, they nevertheless identify some of the key characteristics of the metaphysical style, as epitomised by John Donne (1572-1631).
Instead of supplying a truthful depiction of the way things and human beings are, metaphysical poets distort reality through their perverse combinations of ideas: “the most heterogeneous ideas”, says Johnson, are “yoked by violence together” (Samuel Johnson, Lives of the English Poets, vol.
There is arguably no “uniformity of sentiment” in the poem, to use Johnson’s phrase, and arguably no general truth to be grasped about the nature of love.
