Minerva McGonagall - definition of Minerva McGonagall in Encyclopedia
We are first introduced to Minerva McGonagall in the opening chapter of the Philosopher's Stone, The Boy Who Lived, when she meets Albus Dumbledore at Number four Privet Drive.
Her name derives from two sources: one is from Minerva, the Roman Goddess of Wisdom (so this name suits Minerva very well).
She warns Harry not to provoke Dolores Umbridge, as she works for the Ministry of Magic.

Perhaps J.K. Rowling merely includes McGonagall as an animagus to provide a fantastical element to the story, particularly in the first chapter of PS/SS, where the wizarding world is first introduced.
Now, in each of Trelawney's, Snape's, and McGonagall's inspections, Umbridge asks each of them how long they have been teaching at Hogwarts.
Again, J.K. Rowling appears to make the point of making sure readers understand that McGonagall started teaching in December.

William Topaz McGonagall (see) a nineteenth century Scottish poet who even in his own day was recognized as truly awful.
We'll discuss wizard sweets in more detail when we get to chapter six.
As we are to learn in Harry's third year, McGonagall has very little patience with Divination, so even if she had known of the prophecy she might have scoffed, but I would expect the exchange here to have played out with a different subtext of hints if she'd been aware of the prophecy at all.
