Monstrous Regiment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Monstrous Regiment is an abbreviation of the title of a misogynist 16th century tract by John Knox, the full title of which is, The First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women (the women in question were Mary, Queen of Scots and Mary Tudor).
The Monstrous Regiment is a book by Storm Constantine, released in 1990.
The name is taken from the Knox pamphlet.

 Novel - Factbites
Novels can take any of the generic forms (epic, tragedy, comedy, romance, and satire), but there are two main types: the novel proper and the prose romance.
The story was firmly a "novel" and not a "romance": a story of unparalleled female virtue, with a heroine who had had the chance to risk an illicit amour and not only withstood the temptation but made herself more unhappy by confessing her feelings to her husband.
These novels are not only masterpieces of realism but also—in their carefully crafted form, experimental point of view, and superb style—supreme examples of the novel as a literary genre.

The idea of a woman dressing up as a man to join the army is a hackneyed comedy device, but Pratchett does manage to add some originality with his revelations that central character Polly isn't the only soldier in drag.

Laurie King roots her novels in Mary's theological research which leaves little room for light humor.
Now in A Monstrous Regiment of Women, Mary Russell's adventures as a student of the famous detective continue.

Terry Pratchett Monstrous Regiment Reviewed by Rick Kleffel
Coming through the novel the first time round, readers have too much fun enjoying the humor and the pointy sticks underneath to be bothered with all that skillful writing stuff.
Terry Pratchett has been busily building that world for more than twenty years, and his latest novel of Discworld, 'Monstrous Regiment' will enable all of us to have good laugh and maybe even experience a coherent thought or two without frothing at the mouth, or having to listen to someone else do so.
But as someone who has not read every single Discworld novel in chronological order (though I now intend to do so in the fullness of time), I found it perfectly comprehensible and constantly delightful.

Terry Pratchett Message Board: Monstrous Regiment Discussion *Spoilers*
Monstrous Regiment is an allusion to the blistering sermon of that title by John Knox, the Calvinist/Scottish minister who thundered out against women having the audacity to think they might rule or be anything except subservient to their natural, god-given superiors-men.
I'm not saying it is feminist, and I don't think that Pratchett would ever focus on just one issue, but the prominent discussion of women and oppression makes it reasonable to look at it this way.
Pratchett wasn't being patronising, he wasn't setting out to defend his female characters or anything.

My feeling is that while Monstrous Regiment is not laugh out loud funny (but compared to Night Watch, the book directly before it, it's a walk in the park) the book IS witty, and you should perhaps be a little more flexible in your expectations of Discworld books.
Sure, occassionally Terry slips in some social commentary, he's got some decent characterization skills and his command of the language is good enough that he understands how to use possessives properly (Bob slaps Forrest Carter with a fish) but that's NOT why you pick up one of his books.
You read Discworld novels for the laugh-out-loud, bust a nut, fall down laughing funny stuff.

One consequence of the reality of Monstrous Regiment is that Pratchett’s stable of familiar characters is largely marginalized.
In Monstrous Regiment, this means turning his satirist’s sensibility on sexism, religion, politics, journalism and of course the military life, a life in which the reality on the ground bears very little resemblance to the patriotism and nationalism espoused by those prosecuting the war.
Thus, the world of Monstrous Regiment, Pratchett’s twenty-ninth Discworld novel, benefits from all the development the Discworld has experienced under Pratchett’s stewardship in the preceding twenty-eight books.
