The Mythopoeic World View of Ancient Man
The ancients, like the modern savages, saw man always as part of society, and society as imbedded in nature and dependent upon cosmic forces.
For them nature and man did not stand in opposition and did not, therefore, have to be apprehended by different modes of cognition.

Kath Filmer-Davies, Fantasy Fiction and Welsh Myth: Tales of Belonging
Mythopoeic" means "making" (poien, from which the word "poet" is derived) "myth" (mythos).
Around the world contemporary fantasy writers such as Susan Cooper and Jane Yolen are drawing more and more on ancient Welsh mythic tales and folklore as the basis of their stories.
She notes that historical romances also have fantasy elements, i.e., the works of Sharon Kay Penman, Edith Pargeter, and Barbara Erskine.

 Mythopoeic Thought
For the ancients, human beings were imbedded in society and that society was imbedded in nature and nature was embedded in cosmic forces.
Notice that there is nothing in this definition about whether or not the story is true.
People, on the other hand, we learn about through understanding, by trying to sympathize with them, by trying to "get inside their heads." In mythopoeic thought, there are no objects in the world only persons.

 Power of Myth: Darcy Pattison
But if you steep yourself in mythology, read the best of the mythopoeic literature, and people your stories with fascinating characters, you might just create a classic.
Without that time-consuming work in creating an original mythological base, his story wouldn't have enjoyed such immense popularity for the last half century.
While this book draws upon mythology, it isn't a straight retelling of a myth.
