NOVEL - LoveToKnow Article on NOVEL
With this book, the first great group of English novels comes to a close, and we may observe that in these eight stories everything is to be found, in germ if not in full evolution, which was during the next century and a half to make the abundant out-put of the English novel prominent.
The novel called The Twice-Flowering Plum-Trees, belonging to the 16th (or I7th) century, is a typical example of the moral Chinese novel, written with a virtuous purpose.
A collection of tales, called Ii Noveilino or Cento novelle antiche (although only 66 of the ioo survive), was composed at the end of the I3th century, and started this class of literature in Europe.

 Novel - Free Encyclopedia
The early novel was meant to reach a large public and at the beginning it was considered as a lower form of literature - neither true nor beautiful.
A novel is an invented story presented in book form.
This admits of counterexamples: many novels, among them Ulysses by James Joyce and Moby-Dick by Herman Melville, contain passages written in drama or verse form.

novel - Columbia Encyclopedia article about novel
These novels are not only masterpieces of realism but also—in their carefully crafted form, experimental point of view, and superb style—supreme examples of the novel as a literary genre.
An early and prevalent type was the picaresque novel, in which the protagonist, a social underdog, has a series of episodic adventures in which he sees much of the world around him and comments satirically upon it.
The term novel is derived from novella, Italian for a compact, realistic, often ribald prose tale popular in the Renaissance and best exemplified by the stories in Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron (1348–53).

Saddam Husayn's Novel of Fear - Middle East Quarterly - Winter 2002
It should be read as a summary of his life, an "artistic" contribution to his people, an epitaph, and a last will and testament, all rolled into one.
Often the novel jumps without warning from pre-Islamic antiquity to modern times, making the story difficult to follow.
To understand the political meaning of Zabiba and the King, it is necessary to dwell for a moment on the book’s turgid plot—and a plot it certainly is. It unfolds, like any standard soap opera, through episodes of love, jealousy, betrayal, vengeance, and wisdom.

Notes on the beginning of the English novel
Unlike literary forms that feature an appeal to the exotic and the far-away in place and time, novels are stories of now or about events in a relevant past.
In his criticism of Watt, McKeon points out that "romance" continues to be extremely important in an anti-individualist and idealizing tradition.
On the other hand, no single word or phrase can distinguish the novel from romance or from anything else, not possible to settle for ''realism" or ''individualism" or "character" as the defining characteristic

 The UVic Writer's Guide: Novel
Novels can take any of the generic forms (epic, tragedy, comedy, romance, and satire), but there are two main types: the novel proper and the prose romance.
The modern romance, like its medieval precursor, focuses mainly upon one character's adventures, often with stereotypical heroes and villains, a setting remote from everyday life (sometimes in the historical past), and events that are non realistic or melodramatic, as in Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers (1845).
The novel is a long fictional narrative written in prose, which arose in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries and overtook verse narratives in popularity, eventually replacing them.
