Oxford English Dictionary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The early modern English prose of Sir Thomas Browne is the most frequently quoted source of neologisms.
The full title had now become A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles; Founded Mainly on the Materials Collected by The Philological Society, and the 352 pages, covering words from A to Ant, were priced at 12s.6d.
Trench suggested that nothing short of a new and truly comprehensive dictionary would do: one that would be based on contributions from a large number of volunteer readers, who would read books, copy out passages illustrating various actual uses of words onto quotation slips, and mail them to the editor.

 The Oxford English Dictionary
A dictionary like no other in the world, the OED has been described as "among the wonders of the world of scholarship." With the publication of the Second Edition, that statement is today more apt than it ever has been.
The ultimate authority on the usage and meaning of English words and phrases, unparalleled in its accuracy and comprehensiveness, the Oxford English Dictionary is the supreme reference work for anyone who loves the language.
Published between 1972 and 1986, this Supplement was produced to bring the Dictionary up to date, to extend its coverage to the language of the mid-20th century, and to reflect the ever-broadening international nature of the English.

 Words: Woe and Wonder
The fact that The New Oxford Dictionary of English, published in 1998, ignores dot.com but bothers to include an archaic meaning of dot ("a dowry from which only the interest or annual income was available to the husband") doth show (another entry in the same tome) the problem of trying to capture a living language.
James Murray, the titan behind the First Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, considered himself "a man of science … interested in that branch of anthropology which deals with the history of human speech." Like Samuel Johnson a century and a half earlier, he accepted the evolution of language as both natural and inevitable.
His stewardship of the work, and friendship with a convicted killer who contributed thousands of citations from an asylum, are chronicled in Simon Winchester's 1998 book The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary.

I thought to sell such a dictionary you'd have to be able to read it with the magnifier or what was the use but it really is a challenge so how much time do you want to spend looking around for a word and strain while trying to focus and read.
This dictionary is unequalled (see the praise of all the other reviewers, with whom I agree regarding the quality of this reference).
Fortunately, the book is so heavy and well made that the pages appear to have been rescued by gravity and a night on its side, but I'm nonetheless displeased as the guide still looks like it's accompanied me on a long train journey, stuffed into a trouser pocket and slept upon in the mid-day sun.

Shorter Oxford English Dictionary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The whole text was completely revised for the fourth edition, which was published in 1993 as the New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary under the editorship of Lesley Brown.
The book aims to include all English words which had substantial currency after 1700, plus the vocabulary of Shakespeare, Milton, Spenser, and the King James Bible.
An abridgement of the complete work was contemplated from 1879, when the Oxford University Press took over from the Philological Society on what was then known as A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles.

This edition reflects the changes in dictionary practice and format that Oxford has been pursuing in recent years, first with the one-volume New Oxford Dictionary of English (NODE) and with recent editions of the Concise Oxford Dictionary (COD).
