Peter Pettigrew - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
J.K. Rowling hinted that Pettigrew will make additional appearances in the final novel.
During the confrontation with Sirius on that fateful night, it was actually Pettigrew who blasted the muggles and then transformed himself to escape with the other rats down into the sewers.
However, he betrayed the Potters to Voldemort in order to gain the Dark Lord's favour.

Peter Pettigrew - The Sugar Quill
Pettigrew's evil is not the same brand as Voldemort's, perhaps, but it is evil nevertheless.
Peter, knowing he has no friends in the world, goes to live with the Weasleys, posing as their pet rat.
Pettigrew is evil because he would step on anyone to save himself.

 HPL: Peter Pettigrew (aka Wormtail)
Peter learned to turn himself into a rat and used the nickname "Wormtail".
Then quite unexpectedly, he was made the Secret Keeper for the Potters, which meant that he would be able to betray their hiding place to his evil master.
He saw right through Peter's disguise and tried to attack him whenever he got a chance.

When Peter Pettigrew was sorted he was a Leutenant in search of a Leader who would admire him for his own qualities.
But Pettigrew couldn’t be arsed as long as he was drifting along in reasonable comfort.
Any of their exploits that they let him in on, he was in up to his neck, and as recklessly as either of them.

 idol_reflection: Peter Pettigrew.
Peter's house is never actually mentioned in canon, however from his close association with Remus, Sirius and James -- all of whom were Gryffindors -- we assume he was also in the house of red and gold.
I loved this essay, and it really captured who I think Peter is. I just have one tiny thing to add: (incidently, you touched on this, but I want to kind of expand on it.) Really, as shown in OotP, he didn't betray his "friends".
In conclusion, there are many reasons to dislike Peter Pettigrew, but at the same time those weaknesses are the reasons to like him, too.

Overanalyzing the Text: HPfGU#40370: Wormtail's Name In the Confession
If the reason that nobody refers to Pettigrew by any name other than "Wormtail" in the confession scene is really the author's desire to keep Sirius' innocence a secret, then what we can deduce from that is that JKR is concerned with one (or both) of two characters: McGonagall and Winky.
Yes, Crouch does refer to Pettigrew as "Wormtail," not only that once ("He arrived at our house late one night in the arms of his servant Wormtail"), but throughout the entirety of his confession.
Looking at it from within the constraints of the fictional reality, I would say that Voldemort calls Pettigrew "Wormtail" because it is a degrading-sounding name and one that Voldemort knows full well was originally bestowed upon him as a mark of affection from the people that he later betrayed.

Peter looked around his untidy flat, thinking that even a rude house-elf would be better than none at all.
And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

 Discussion: Peter Pettigrew's clothes
Yes thats a mistake that bothered me, if Pettigrew cant transform with his clothes then would'nt Ron have found some clothes on the floor when he was attacked by Pettigrew while in bed.
Yeh I noticed that too, I think his cloths should have changed with him back into a rat, but the filmmakers probably liked how he dissapeared into the cloths and then ran off.
Lupin's clothes would not change with him though, as his transformation is a different story.

He is one of the authors of the Marauders Map, and from “Snape’s Worst Memory” in Book Five and McGonagall in Book Three, we know he idolized James.
That’s the reason why Sirius didn’t tell Remus he had switched to Pettigrew at the last second.
